NEWARK PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT’S 3E AWARD

Each year around this time, Newark Public Schools (NPS) takes a moment to acknowledge the accomplishments of its students as they wind down the year and look ahead to new beginnings (and a well-deserved summer break). This is especially true for our graduating seniors – transitioning on to college and careers,and for our 8th graders – transitioning on to high school. As we look back on this year, one of great change, great challenge and great accomplishment – we look to celebrate all of our students, but in particular those students who have demonstrated the greatestEffort in pursuit of Equity and Excellence in their own unique lives.

In that spirit, we are proud to announce the Superintendent’s “3E” Award – Equity, Excellence, & Effort--for well-deserving 8th graders and graduating seniors. We seek to take a moment to honor our students who are at the heart of all our efforts. The3Eaward honors NPS students who relentlessly prioritize equity for themselves and others,show tremendous effort through diligence and hard work, and achieve excellent results in carving their own pathways to success.

The 3E Award: Those selected to receive this honor will each receive an award, a certificate from the Superintendent, and the opportunity to be recognized at his/her high school graduation and at a reception on June 13, 2015. There is no limit to the number of applications that can be submitted by a school community.

Award Criteria: Students will be considered based on the following three areas:

  1. Equity – Relentless Focus on Justice and Fairness: The nominee should exemplifyin spirit and actions the old adage, “treat others the way you want to be treated”.
  2. Effort -- Hard Work and Consistency of Effort: The nominee should specifically demonstrate diligence and perseverance in overcoming obstacles; and in general consistency of effort over time.
  3. Excellence – Results Driven: The nominee should demonstrate excellence and tangible results in one or more of the following areas of: community (school or beyond) involvement for justice and equity, self-improvement, and/or academic achievement/improvement.

Who Is Eligible? Any 8th grader or graduating senior in the Newark Public Schools system

Who Can Nominate? Nominators may be any NPS staff members located from central office, schools, or offsite location (i.e., Enrollment Center, Harold Wilson, etc.)

How to Nominate? We are looking for thoughtful, detailed, concise, and inspired nominations. Please tell us your nominees’ stories—how they achieved excellence and carved out a path to success despite obstacles using tremendous effort and will, and pursued equity along the way for themselves and their communities.

The nominator must complete the attached application form to by April 14, 2015 at 5PM.

What are the submission requirements?

Nominators must submit theinformation form and any supporting evidence that you believe will strengthen your nomination (not required for consideration), such as:

  • YouTube link about the nominee’s successes and achievements; or testimonials or stories by the nominator or others about why the nominee must be considered for the award—his/her life story, obstacles, hard work, and successes
  • Relevant academic or community based information: certificates or acknowledgements
  • Letters of recommendation from teachers, community leaders, and other relevant sources
