The Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup
Formerly known as the Centenary Cup, the race was first run in 1984 to celebrate the centenary of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. In the 2000/2001 season the race was upgraded to domestic Group 1 status, and starting from the 2005/2006 racing season it was programmed as the first leg of the Hong Kong Speed Series. Since becoming a local Group 1 event, three winners of this race have subsequently been crowned Hong Kong’s outright Champion and Champion Sprinter in the same year: Grand Delight (2003), Silent Witness (2004 & 2005) and Sacred Kingdom (2010). A total of five horses have achieved back-to-back successes in this race in the past 21 years, including Best Of The Best (1999 & 2000), Silent Witness (2004 & 2005), Scintillation (2006 & 2007), Sacred Kingdom (2010 & 2011) and Eagle Regiment (2012 & 2013). In recent years, winners of this race have also performed well in Dubai next start. Eagle Regiment (2013) finished a creditable third in G1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m, turf) at Meydan, and Amber Sky (2014) won the same race in Dubai after making all to take the Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup in style. The total prize money for this race has been further increased this season to HK$6.6 million, representing an increase of 10%.
