KZN MASTERS SWIMMING WINTER FITNESS CHALLENGE 2011

Sunday 14th August dawned and over 52 KZN Masters Swimmers and their friends braved the unusually cold Durban weather, more suitable for Polar Bears in order to swim their fastest at the Gordon Rd School Pool all in aid of raising money for charity. The chosen charity for 2011 was the MOTHWA HAVEN, which is a home for the Aged. In addition to the teams' entry fee swimmers were encouraged to bring toiletries etc. No less than 14 potential new members participated in the relays.

Strydom and Morag Bromfield Goldstein

The winning team of Mark and Julian Taylor, Lwazi Deyi and John Ellis clocked up 6150m in the allocated 60 minutes. Close on their heels were the "Hangovers", Pete and Barbs Lavett (Bowley), "Horse" Stewart and Warren Beuster who swum 6100m. Some teams swum laps of 25m, others 50 or 100m. Some chose to dive in whilst others started each lap in the water.

Hot soup awaited the swimmers and there were also lucky draws. At the end of the morning the swimmers treated themselves to lunch at one of Durban's Florida Rd restaurants.

A total of R1800 in cash, over 250 toiletry items, a stove, curtains, bedding and many other items were collected and given to the charity. Peter Larcombe (KZN Masters Swimming President), Merle Angelos (Vice President) and Loraine Hicks a Committee member handed the kitchenware eg jugs, bowls, cutlery etc that were requested by Mothwa Haven as well as linen, curtains and a braai to Mothwa Haven on Tuesday 12th September.

DOLPHIN SURF SWIM SERIES

Sunday 4th September saw the 9th and final event in the Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series which is swum during the months of April to September in Durban.

Many Masters swimmers not only took part but managed to complete all 9 events in the series as well as walking away with some of the series age group prizes.

The series was well attended and only one event had to be postponed for the sardines this year. This enabled 9 events to be swum with only 6 counting to complete the series.

Swimmers who completed 6 or more were given a gift for their participation.

Masters swimmers came from as far afield as the UK, Perth and Auckland. Rocco Trollip is back in SA for a few months from NZ and Andrew Stevens was here on holiday from Perth. Annette Thatcher from the UK came to be with her mom.

Many Gauteng Masters swimmers entered as well, Clare Davie (did 4 events), Sam Gunther (1), Guy Harker, Owen Scheftz, Tracy Helps, and Anria Ebersohn all competed in the 7th August event.
