Workshop Session Notes

1. The morning ‘Good practice – Useful lessons’ session aims to identify best and emerging practice in the areas of:
-  Microfinance and income generation models
-  Adapting water and sanitation systems in changing political, societal and environmental contexts
-  The changing nature of the humanitarian scape: When to mainstream disaster risk reduction (DRR)?
-  Activity monitoring: What is meaningful data?
Selected organisations will present case studies to kick start a facilitated discussion on what contributes to a successful activity, and to share lessons where things have not always gone to plan. It will provide an opportunity for organisations which may be planning to develop an activity in a particular sector to talk to others with similar plans.
2. The ‘New Zealand Inc in the regions’ session after lunch will provide an opportunity for organisations to join a facilitated discussion and share their strategic direction and discuss emerging issues in one of five groups (PNG, Melanesia/Micronesia, Polynesia, South East Asia, and ‘Rest of World’). This session aims to provide a basis for ongoing collaborative discussion between New Zealand organisations.
The session will start with brief high level updates from MFAT management on the political environment, strategic focus and emerging issues in the regions. Breakout sessions will then invite organisations to discuss the following:
·  What is the strategic direction of your organisation in the region, and where is your organisation working?
·  What are your organisations’ areas of key expertise?
·  Are there opportunities for greater collaboration with other New Zealand organisations?
·  How might we facilitate working together for effective development outcomes?
3. The Group Facilitators will form a panel at the end of the day to highlight one key takeaway from their discussion group.
