PART I: How Much Will College Cost?

College costs keep going up and up! Whether or not you are going off to college next fall, or in several years, it is useful to know how much, on average, college costs.

Follow the instructions below to complete Part I:

1)  Select a college major you are interested in receiving a Bachelor’s Degree.

o  A college major is a group of courses (classes) required by a college in order to receive a degree

·  (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Biology, Psychology, Accounting, Journalism)

o  Use Google to help you identify your college major

·  Helpful hints to help you identify your major using Google

·  (e.g. What college major should I choose to be a Lawyer?)

·  (e.g. What college major should I choose to be a Pediatrician?)

2)  Select a 4-year college you are interested in attending outside of the Houston area that awards a Bachelor’s Degree in your college major.

o  This includes any University of Houston campus (Downtown, Northwest, Sugarland, Clear Lake, Cinco Ranch, Clear Lake-Pearland, Victoria)

o  Not all colleges have all majors.

3)  Browse the Internet to find current costs (2014 – 2015 or 2015 – 2016) in regards to tuition and fees, room and board, textbooks, and other expenses for the university you selected.

o  Use Google and/or college websites

·  Helpful hints to help you search on Google

·  (e.g. current cost of tuition and fees at University of Houston)

·  (e.g. current cost of room and board at LSU)

o  Helpful hints to help you narrow down your costs

·  You are a full-time undergraduate student (enrolled in at least 12 hours a semester)

·  You are a resident if attending a college inside the U.S.

·  You are a non-resident if attending a college outside the U.S.

·  You are in-state if you live in the state of the college location

·  You are out-of-state if you do not live in the state of the college location

·  Include any mandatory fees the college requires you to pay

·  You will be living on-campus (no family/relatives)

·  Select a residence hall that suits your needs

·  Other expenses include transportation, personal, etc.

4)  Create a Microsoft Word document that includes the information below.

o  Use a professional font with a size of 12 or more

o  Official College Name (NO Abbreviations)

o  College Location (City, State)

o  College Major

o  The following 4 categories need to be inserted in a table.

·  Tuition and Fees (include university mandatory fees)

·  Room and Board

·  Textbooks

·  Other (e.g. Transportation, Personal, etc.)

o  Estimated Cost for 1 Year (Hint: Add all the costs from above. Do NOT round.)

o  Estimated Cost for 4 Years (Hint: Multiply the answer above by 4. Do NOT round.)

o  College Logo or Mascot

o  Cite the websites you used to find your information on a separate page
