Conditions of Employment :
National Sixth Form Colleges’ Association Pay Spine and Conditions of Employment for Support Staff. Permanent 0.855 contract, 20 hours per week to be worked over 5 days: Monday to Friday.
Main Purpose of Post:
To support the Teacher of DT by maintaining an organised workshop and in assisting students in their practical work.

Main Duties:

  • To carry out first line servicing of machines and equipment in workshop, to ensure safety and reliability. This will include cleaning, oiling, sharpening, removing dust and minor repairs.
  • To clean and sharpen hand tools and maintain the good order and organisation of the workshop and its storage facilities.
  • To prepare materials and equipment for lessons and projects in accordance with teachers’ instructions, including preparation of demonstration materials and resources and the stocking of classroom with consumable items.
  • To order resources, receive incoming goods, check delivery notes, store materials and confirm invoices. To maintain an inventory system for items with a replacement value of £50 or more.
  • To undertake general workshop maintenance and DIY tasks, including the use of workshop machinery where required (soldering, bandsaw, thicknesser, circular saw etc).
  • To have a working knowledge of CAD/CAM machinery e.g. CNC lathe, Unimatic router etc.
  • To provide in-class support to students, as requested by the teacher in charge. To prepare display materials and equipment for parents evening, remove and display items of work around the school, as and when requested.
  • To control and store safely all chemicals, flammables and specialist solutions, ensuring that the current Health & Safety, COSHH and ESCC regulations are adhered to. To maintain all necessary safety signs adjacent to machinery and maintain a record of all equipment checks.
  • To keep sinks and worktops clean; maintain aprons in a serviceable condition; keep stock rooms and workshop clean, tidy and in good order.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance and deployment of all A/V equipment within the department.
  • To undertake other design technology tasks as requested by staff.
  • To observe and practice workshop health and safety procedures.
  • To undertake any other duty the Principal may from time to time require.

The post involves substantial contact with young people, academic staff, the general public and other agencies working in the education sector.

NB These duties may be reviewed during the year to ensure that College needs are continuing to be met.
