Outreach Meet & Greet Volunteer
Role:You will become an ambassador for Southampton City Council’s Arts and Heritage by telling visitors to the city and tourists about what’s on offer in the city. While mainly focussed on the main attractions offered by SCC this also covers a wider role of promoting the city more generally.
We have a growing programme of outreach events, helping make our Museums and Art Gallery more widely known, for instance welcoming cruise passengers and assisting at stalls for city-wide events. This is a perfect opportunity for people interested in experience in the tourism industry and for those interested in promoting what Southampton has to offer.
Responsible to: Kathryn Beresford (Volunteer Co-ordinator) and Steve Newell (Visitor Services Manager (Commercial)).
Location: City-wide, but often at cruise terminals.
Hours: Days for outreach events will be scheduled in advance and agreed to by you. We ask, where possible, that you are able to stay for the whole event.
Timescale: Once you have submitted your Registration form, you may be invited to attend an informal interview with the Volunteer Co-ordinator to discuss the role.
If you are selected to be one of the volunteers, you will need to attend an induction session as soon as possible after the informal meeting with staff members. This, and any questions or queries you may have, can be discussed in your meeting.
1. Purpose of role:Primarily a customer service role, volunteers will actively engage members of the public, promote what Southampton has to offer and actively encourage and direct visitors to our three venues: SeaCity Museum, City Art Gallery and Tudor House and Garden. Also opportunities may arise to promote other things on offer in the city which are offered by third parties.
2. Specific tasks:
- Meeting and greeting visitors
- Being on hand to direct visitors and answer any queries about the museums and art gallery.
- Promoting what Southampton has to offer
3. General role:
- To act as a representative and ambassador for Arts and Heritage
- To promote the health and safety of passengers, staff and volunteersby following designated procedures
- To work within the Volunteer Guidelines and relatedorganisational policies (i.e. Child Protection; Grievance &
Disciplinary; Equalities; Access)
4. Relevant qualities:
- Excellent customer service skills
- An enthusiastic attitude
- Good interpersonal skills
- An active interest in local history and culture.
- Reliability and flexibility
- Personable, confident and outgoing
- Attention to detail
- Willingness to work as part of a team
- Willingness to undertake any necessary training as required
- German speaking is desirable but not essential.
5. DBS Check:
This role does not usually require a DBS check. This can be discussed in more detail at your informal meeting with the Volunteer Co-ordinator and Supervisor.
