PRACTICES & PROCEDURES

POLICY STATEMENT

Food provided at St. Joseph’s Payneham OSHC will be nutritious and varied. Snack times and activities involving food preparation will provide positive learning experiences for children, who will be encouraged to develop healthy eating habits. Life Skills including self-confidence and independence will be encouraged during food preparation and clean-up times.

NUTRITIONAL PRACTICES

§  All food is stored and prepared hygienically.

§  Each child uses their own placemat, drink cup and eating utensils

§  The OSHC service will provide children with balanced snacks that meet the recommended nutritional needs of children.

§  Snack/meal times will be friendly and relaxed. Staff will sit with the children where possible and interact with them to encourage good eating habits and an appreciation of a variety of foods and drinks.

§  Where possible, snacks and drinks will reflect a variety of cultures, especially the cultural backgrounds of families living within the local community.

§  The traffic light system is used to code the various foods. (Green – go – eat often, Yellow – eat some of the time, Red- stop-keep away)

§  Snacks and drinks will be appetising and provide variety. Where possible, fresh produce will be used.

§  Fresh filtered water is provided daily and other juices and drinks for special occasions

§  Menus will be planned with input from children and staff. Menus will be displayed on the noticeboard. Feedback from parents/ carers/ management committee in regards to the Menu is welcomed by OSHC staff.

§  Parents/ carers will supply breakfast food if they would like their child to eat between 7:30 am – 8:00 am during OSHC time.

§  Children are not permitted to consume food packed in their school bag during before school care.

§  Snack will be available at after school care at 4:00 – 4:30 pm each afternoon. A variety of hot and cold snacks will be available for afternoon tea. Fruit and vegetables will be provided at least 4 afternoons a week.

§  Sugary foods and drinks will be allowed on special occasions.

Policy Implementation:

·  All OSHC children will wash and dry their hands before eating.

·  The OSHC will provide foods which are wholesome, low in fat with restricted use of additives, flavourings, colourings, sugar and salt.

·  Water and cows milk will also be offered. Children will be encouraged to drink water after every meal and through out the day.

·  Food is prepared and stored hygienically.

·  Providing children with balanced snacks that meet the recommended nutritional needs of children.

·  Snack times will be treated as social occasions. Staff members will sit with the children and interact with them to encourage good eating habits.

·  Where possible, snacks will reflect a variety of cultures and backgrounds within the community (pasta, fried rice etc).

·  Snacks will be appetizing and provide variety, fresh produce will be used.

·  Drinking water will always be accessible to staff and children.

·  Children will be encouraged to try different food but will never be forced to eat.

·  Where children are on special diets, the parents may be asked to provide a list of suitable/ unsuitable foods for their child’s food preferences or to supply special food.

·  The denial of food will never be used as punishment.

·  The importance of good, healthy food will be discussed with children during snack time.

·  Staff will provide positive encouragement and role modelling during snack time.

The following guidelines are for special occasions, eg. Birthdays

To reduce the minimizing of the spread of droplet infection – i.e. Droplets in the air – this can happen when a child blows out candles on a birthday cake. The OSHC staff will cut a slice of cake; the candles will be placed in that slice to be blown out.

We recognize that some children may have special diets due to medical, culture or religious reasons. The coordinator and service staff will work with families to ensure each child’s needs are met. Where a child has an allergy to certain foods, it will be recorded.

The OSHC service is committed to ensuring safe eating practices therefore the following will be to adhered-

For all children:

·  All children will wash and dry their hands before eating.

·  Foods that can break off into hard pieces and nuts will not be offered due to the high incidence of allergy.

·  Mealtimes and the eating environment play a large role in the nutrition outcomes of children. It helps children to learn and form good eating habits, to learn a positive attitude about food, to try a variety of foods and to learn family and community values and culturally inclusive perspective.

To ensure meal times are safe and enjoyable

·  Children will be supervised whilst eating at all times

·  Staff will sit with children and, where possible, eat and enjoy the same food

·  Staff will promote a positive, relaxed, social eating environment and children

·  Staff will promote positive discussion about the food being served

·  Staff will provide positive encouragement and role modelling

·  The food preferences of the children will be respected

·  Cultural food events and practices will be celebrated

·  Staff will discuss health and nutrition

·  Staff will encourage self-help and, where necessary, assist children at mealtimes.

·  Precautions to prevent and treat chocking are known by all staff and implemented

PROCEDURES FOR AFTERNOON SNACK TIME

1.  All children will wash and dry their hands before any eating.

2.  All children will be encouraged to help wherever possible with the food preparation and clean up of dishes. Children are encouraged to wash and dry their own plate/bowl/cup and eating utensils.

3.  One afternoon a week, children will be encouraged to help OSHC staff prepare afternoon snack.

4.  Drinking water will always be available and accessible for children and staff.

5.  Children and OSHC staff sit down for snack time at 4:00pm each afternoon in the Multi-purpose Room.

6.  Children are encouraged to eat a variety of healthy food throughout the week.

7.  The Snack Menu for the week is permanently on display.

As children learn best through experiences, learning about food will also be incorporated within the OSHC program as follows:

·  Including nutrition activities in planned curriculum and spontaneous programming

·  Source food activities from a variety of cultures

·  Treat meal times as an opportunity for social learning

·  Provide children with practical food preparation experiences

·  Discuss food safety with children

·  Teach children mealtime behaviour such as serving and clearing

Staff will receive in service training in nutrition, food safety and food handling and is updated every 12 months.

FEEDBACK

Each term, the OSHC Director will review comments and feedback about food and drink provided in OSHC. Any changes to the menu will taken after consultation with OSHC Families, the Principal. P & F and School Board. Children and families are welcome to make comments and suggestions at any time with regard to the nutritional aspects of the OSHC service.
