Lesson Objectives:

  • To name household items
  • To name rooms in a house
  • To use where
  • To use prepositions in, on, under
  • To use the subject pronoun it, I, and they
  • To use the present progressive
  • To use verbs in the present progressive tense
  • To use the subject pronoun it instead of a noun

Classroom English:

Find. Say. Circle. Color. Put. Draw. Listen. Write. Show me. What is this? What are they doing? What is it?

Language Patterns:

  • What is this? This is a (bedroom).
  • It is a kitchen.
  • The (clock) is (under) the (table).
  • Where is the (lamp)? The (lamp) is (in) the box.
  • This is a (clock).
  • We are (eating).
  • They are (watching TV).
  • This is a (clock).
  • It is a (lamp).
  • They’re (in) the (living room).
  • They’re (sleeping).

Materials:

Crayons, drawing paper, big box, index cards with: in, on, under, slips of papers with the words: eating, sleeping, reading, watching; box; picture of a TV; Picture Cards: living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, read, sleep, eat, watch

Realia: big box, clock, table, chair, picture, lamp

Picture Cards:

Into Activities

Warm-up/Accessing prior knowledge (5 minutes)

Welcome the class. Show students the picture cards or use the realia for the following words: box, tub, bed, clock, table, chair, lamp, bathroom, bedroom, living room, and kitchen. As you hold up each picture or item, model the new word and then ask the students to repeat. Follow the directions for Warming Up on page 45.

Through Activities

Page 45 Student Book (15 minutes)

Have the students open their books to page 45 and do the activities.

Students identify what they see. Then, play the recording and point to each item.

You will need a cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 46 Teacher’s Guide/Student Book (20 minutes)

Do the Using Page 46 activities on page 46 of the Teacher’s Guide. Play the recording as you point to the pictures in the Student Book. Then, read the directions for the writing activity as students follow along. Continue with the rest of the directions for Using Page 46.

Page 46 Student Book (20 minutes)

Do the Having Fun activity “Put the (clock) in the box.” on page 46 using realia or picture cards from the Unit. Then, choose another Having Fun activity: Suggestion: Where is the clock? Students may work in teams for this activity.

Students at higher level of language proficiency may write down the sentence as they find the clock: The (clock) is (under) the (table).

Page 47 Student Book (20 minutes)

Have students open their student books to page 47.

Go to Teacher’s Edition, page 47, and skip the Warming Up activity. Go directly to Using Page 47. Follow the Instructions for Using Page 47.

Nutrition Break/Snack Time – (20 Minutes)

Page 48 Student Book (10 minutes)

Help student turn the pages in their books to page 48. Do the Using Page 48 activities on page 48 of the Teacher’s Guide.

Page 48 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do the Having Fun activity My House. Fold a piece of drawing paper into four sections and label the boxes: kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. Student will then draw objects in the rooms. More advanced students can draw additional items in their houses.

Page 49 Student Book (10 minutes)

Have students look at page 49 and tell you what they see. The have them complete the page in their Student Books.

Page 49 Teacher’s Guide (10 minutes)

Follow the Using Page 49 Instructions. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity. Ask student to read chorally.

Page 50 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Follow the instructions on page 50 in the Teacher’s Guide Using Page 50. Students will be doing a reading and writing activity. If time permits, do Listen and Do, on page 50 of the Teacher’s Guide, where students whisper verbs to each other.

Pages 51 and 52 (20 minutes)

Do the Warming Up Activity on page 51 (you will need the picture cards again here) (5 minutes) Then, help the students find page 51 in their books. Continue with the instructions in Using Page 15. (10 minutes) Then, have students turn to page 52 and follow Using Page 52, which is a review. (5 minutes)

If teachers have extra time, they can do the following activities:
