launch (Oct 16) followed by crossing a million units (June 17). The sector is still in an early phase of development in India and globally- though in the past year or so some startups in India have got early stage funding. The use cases are also expanding from what was traditionally a medium for brand experiences and advertising to a wider set across industrial, real-estate, healthcare and many more. Globally, there are several significant developments in the VR/AR sector, including Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus (March 14), Hololens launch (March 16), MagicLeap’s $500M round (Oct 14) and Playstation VR launch (Oct 16), and which all indicate the emergence and growth of this sector in the coming days.
The VR/AR technology is still in the emerging state in India, although there are companies in the country that are using some of these technologies for marketing and brand experience. The startup scene is gradually picking up in the country, and there is a number of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology based startups, which now started offering solutions for defense and medicine and other application areas.
It is expected that these capabilities will very fast expand to the industrial segment in the near future with many large global companies engaging with Indian companies for training and maintenance solutions.
