About the Role

About our Department

The Department of Neurology maintains a large inpatient, outpatient, consultative, clinical neurophysiological service and clinical neuropsychology service.

These services are provided to patients with a wide range of neurological disorders including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, encephalitis, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, other movement disorders, spinal cord disease, peripheral neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, muscle disorders and migraine. The Department of Neurology at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) serves as a major tertiary referral centre for neurology in Queensland.

The Department of Neurology is closely affiliated with the University of Queensland (School of Medicine) and has a major role in the teaching of neurology to medical students and to medical residents and registrars, including those training towards fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and membership of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists. There are also several PhD scholars conducting research within the department.

We are building on this success with the introduction of a Comprehensive Epilepsy Program (CEP). The CEP expands upon existing resources in the medical and surgical management of people with epilepsy at RBWH, increasing the capacity of the service and meeting the demand for specialised investigation and management.

Purpose

§  The Director of the CEP will be responsible for expanding the currently provided service, providing clinical expertise and expertise in management to ensure that the CEP is capable of assessing and managing patients with Epilepsy in accordance with national and international standards and practice.

§  The position will also be responsible for the ongoing management of the CEP, including organisation of service

§  The Director of the CEP will function as a member of the RBWH Department of Neurology team including involvement in the on-call roster, outpatient services and management of Neurology inpatients.

§  The position will also provide an inpatient consultation service on referral from inpatient teams.

§  The position may be allocated to clinics outside of RBWH and elsewhere within the Metro North Hospital and Health Service.

Key Accountabilities

§  Manage the performance appraisal and development of subordinate staff.

§  Provide ethical decision making in the achievement of organisational goals.

§  Document relevant clinical information legibly, concisely and accurately.

§  Ensure the post-discharge care of patients is arranged as required.

§  Arrange the transfer of patients as required.

§  Ensure an appropriate handover of patients transferred to a hospital ward or to another hospital.

§  Supervise the clinical care of patients by Junior Medical Staff in the Department.

§  Supervise and teach Junior Medical Staff and Medical Students attached to the Department in the clinical aspects of Neurology.

§  Be aware of and adhere to all relevant hospital policies and procedures.

§  Be aware of the terms and conditions of employment for Staff Specialists as per the Senior Medical Officers’ and Resident Medical Officers Award – State.

§  Perform duties efficiently and in a professional manner.

§  Treat patients and their families with courtesy and sympathy and treat all hospital staff and professional colleagues with courtesy and respect.

§  Participate in departmental clinical audits and clinical meetings.

§  Provide medical reports as requested.

§  Represent the Hospital and Department on committees as requested by and/or with the approval of the Director of Neurology and Executive Director of Internal Medicine Services.

§  Provide advice, as appropriate, for the planning of Hospital activities.

§  Contribute to cost savings in the provision of health care at the Hospital by the efficient utilisation of resources.

§  Develop the philosophy of and put into practice the continual improvement of all services received from and provided to patients and staff.

§  To comply with Human Resources Management issues, including workplace harassment, workplace health and safety, employment equity and anti-discrimination as applied in the working environment.

§  Supervision of Junior Medical Staff and Research Staff

Clinical Role

§  Full-time at the Herston Campus across RBWH and other hospitals within the Metro North Hospital and Health Service.

Research Role

§  The Director of the CEP will be supported in their efforts to be competitive in obtaining research funding at a national level. Publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations at National and international neurology and neuroscience meetings will be encouraged.

Safety and Quality

§  Relevant to the position, participate in the ongoing education, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of safety and quality initiatives relevant to The National Safety and Quality Health Services Standards and the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) Evaluation and Quality Improvement Program (EQuIP).

Mandatory qualifications/Professional registration/Other requirements

§  Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and, where applicable, registration or membership with the Medical Board of Australia. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to the commencement of clinical duties.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under Key Accountabilities, the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

§  Clinical experience in the management of Epilepsy at a quaternary level to allow delivery of care at a demonstrably high level of excellence.

§  Experience in the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy and with management of patients following respective and non-respective (e.g. vagal nerve stimulator) epilepsy surgery

§  Clinical experience in the management of the full spectrum of neurological disorders at a tertiary level to allow delivery of care at a demonstrably high level of excellence.

§  Demonstrable capacity to work in a multidisciplinary team delivering comprehensive epilepsy care,

§  Demonstrable capacity to foster research in the field of epilepsy of high quality.

§  Demonstrable capacity to continue to develop undergraduate and postgraduate education in neurology.

Experience

§  Extensive postgraduate experience in clinical neurology, especially Epilepsy.

§  Experience in the operations of a neurology department within a large teaching hospital.

§  Experience in the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures essential to provide a service in neurology.

§  Training and achievement in research as shown by publications in peer-reviewed journals and success in obtaining peer-reviewed research funds.

§  Experience in both undergraduate and postgraduate education activities.

Skills and Abilities

§  Ability to lead and successfully accomplish tasks in a professional and clinical environment.

§  Ability to work collegially with other departmental members in a team approach to solving clinical problems presented.

§  Ability to meet the clinical workload targets and financial performance budgets as well as to implement the budget planning and review.

§  Ability to negotiate and communicate effectively with all levels of medical staff and nursing staff and allied health professionals.

§  Ability to undertake and supervise research projects.

§  Teaching skills appropriate to the training and education of medical registrars, medical students, nurses and other allied health staff.

Knowledge

§  Extensive knowledge of the field of neurology and associated medical disciplines, with a focus on Epilepsy.

§  Knowledge of or an ability to acquire a knowledge of procedures, policies, regulations which impact upon the position, and a knowledge of contemporary human resource management issues such as workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity, and anti-discrimination.
