One-year Internship Programme

General Information and Terms of Reference for 2017 applicants

The World YWCA established its Internship Programme to enhance and further develop young women's leadership. Participants have the opportunity to get hands-on with the work of the World YWCA Movement and gain experience in areas such as programme development, leadership, advocacy, communications, financial development and management. As part of the World Office team in Geneva, Switzerland, the internship provides opportunities to develop expertise on global issues particularly in the World YWCA’s global focus areas of:

  • Transformative young women and girls’ leadership
  • Violence against women and girls
  • Child, early and forced marriage
  • Peace and justice
  • Sexual reproductive health and rights
  • Economic empowerment and information and communication technology
  • Social, economic and environmental justice and faith and culture

In October 2015,the World YWCA celebrated a landmark movement during its World Council meeting when members unanimously adopted a common Envisioning 2035 ‘BOLD AND TRANSFORMATIVE GOAL’: By 2035, 100 million young women and girls transform power structures to create justice, gender equality and a world without violence and war; leading a sustainable YWCA movement, inclusive of all women.”

Over the next four years 2016 – 2019, as the organisation moves toward this goal, the YWCA is committed to implementing a Strategic Framework which focuses on the following key strategic priorities:

• Sustaining the YWCA Movement.

Internship Programme Objectives

  1. To further develop the skills, experience and knowledge of YWCA young women leaders through active participation as members of the World YWCA staff team, and through exposure to a broad range of programmes and activities.
  2. To provide training which prepares young women for leadership roles upon return to their own associations and regions as well as for World YWCA leadership roles.
  3. To widen the scope of World YWCA programmes and activities through young women's leadership, advocacy and active participation.
  4. To facilitate interns to build advocacy skills and to advocate for social, economic and environmental justice. To mobilise young women as advocates, champions and leaders on the priority issues of sexual reproductive health and rights, HIV, Violence against women and movement building.

Since 1990 interns have come from YWCAs in Sierra Leone, USA, Kenya, Aotearoa-New Zealand, Peru, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Korea, Argentina, Liberia, Australia, Myanmar, Canada, Uganda, Norway, Jordan, Barbados, Lebanon, Belgium, Pakistan, Tanzania, Belarus, Philippines, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Argentina, Namibia, Nigeria, Myanmar, Solomon Islands, Mexico, South Africa, India, PNG, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, Great Britain, Mainland China and Estonia Interns for 2016 are from the YWCAs of Haiti, Honduras and Tanzania.

The internship programme in 2017

In 2017, interns will support World YWCA advocacy initiatives by collaborating with the communications and programme teams under the priority themes Strengthening Young Women and Girls Transformative Leadership, Realising Human Rights and, Sustaining the YWCA Movement. Internship opportunities will exist in the communications and the programmes department, with a goal to ensure interns experience the diversity of the work of the World YWCA.

The internship programme will include assisting with the implementation of the World YWCA strategic framework. It will also include working with the World YWCA staff and reporting and engaging with young women and the movement, supporting implementation and monitoring of donor grants, as well as supporting international training events and World YWCA representation at sessions of United Nations Human Rights Council and Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Committee.

Other experiences include

  • Training opportunities in leadership, communication platforms, programme development and advocacy work.
  • Exposure to the work of international NGOs and UN agencies including representing the World YWCA at UN and international NGO meetings.
  • Communications and social media projects including managing our e-bulletins, and contributing articles to theWorld YWCA website, she speaks blog, as well as working with our various social media platforms
  • Developing skills in good governance, project development and, programme management, monitoring and evaluation and team building.
  • Opportunities to learn about the work of other national associations and the broad membership base and partner base of the World YWCA.

Criteria for Selection

  • The ability to be flexible, independent and creative with a desire to learn and a willingness to take initiative and to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Generally applicants should have a minimum of two years active involvement with their YWCA.
  • Successful candidates must commit to sharing the experience gained with their YWCA and region following the internship, and their association must commit to integrating their leadership into the association upon their return.
  • A strong commitment and passion in achieving women's rights and leadership.
  • A good working knowledge of English, both oral and written, is essential. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is appreciated.
  • Information Communication and technology competencies related skills.
  • Programme development and implementation knowledge and experience.
  • Applicants must be between 22 and 30 years of age.
  • A willingness to be independent, hardworking, flexible, creative and take initiative.
  • Previous experience and/or knowledge in advocacy and/or activism on women's rights.
  • Applicants must be from an eligible Official Development Assistance country – this is due to the requirements of the funding partner. The list of eligible countries is in the terms of reference for the internship.
  • A commitment to sharing the experience gained with their YWCA following the internship, and their association must commit to integrating their leadership/experience into the association upon the return home.
  • Each candidate’s participation must be endorsed by her Member YWCA.

Dates

The one-year internship begins 1 February 2017 and ends 15 December 2017. The deadline for receiving applications is September 30, 2016. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

Applicants and their member associations will be informed in early October 2016 if they have been successful.

Selection process

A staff committee at the World YWCA will review all applications the above criteria, and we will then conduct interviews via phone or Skype with short-listed applicants and their associations. The World YWCA keeps all applications on file, in case other leadership opportunities arise for applicants not chosen as interns. Please note that while opportunities are open for all YWCAs to apply, preference is given to candidates from developing countries for the one year internship programme due to funding restrictions.

World YWCA Terms of Reference for one year Interns 2017

Purpose of the World YWCA:
To develop the leadership and collective power of women and girls around the world to achieve human rights, health, security, dignity, freedom, justice and peace for all people.

Dedication to the purpose of the World YWCA is essential for all staff and interns. [1]

Interns are accountable to the World YWCA General Secretary through their appointed supervisor. Interns will be appointed for a specific time period. Non-Swiss interns require a work permit. Arrangements for the work permit will be made by the World YWCA who will also be responsible for the associated fees.

Travel

Participants must possess a valid passport and obtain any necessary visas. The World YWCA will cover the most economical and direct route airfare from and to the home country of the participant. The contribution for the long term internship will be USD 250 payable on commencement of the internship programme by the Member Association. Any additional contributions by the Member Association to the travel and accommodation costs would be greatly appreciated as funding for this programme must be continuously sought.

Stipend, Allowances and Insurance

Each intern trainee receives:

1a). A return excess baggage allowance is available of no more than 50 kilograms of personal effects to be sent by the most economical freight from Geneva to the intern’s country of origin (available only for one-year interns). The World YWCA will pay the freight company directly. No allowance for excess luggage is available on arrival in Geneva. Any additional excess luggage expenses must be paid by the intern.

1b). Furnished housing with wi-fi access in a single hostel room is provided.

2a). Stipend payments for food and personal needs of CHF1’300 per month for the full period of the internship.

2b). Basic health insurance is provided to cover health problems arising during the internship, including monthly premiums and annual deductible costs, to a maximum of CHF 6’000 for the year. Swiss disability and pension scheme (AVS) as well as unemployment insurance and taxes (as required by law) are paid by the World YWCA.

2c). Interns will be covered by group accident insurance for any accident occurring both during and outside office hours and in Switzerland and abroad.

2d). Travel insurance is provided while travelling on World YWCA business.

3). A Geneva bus pass is provided for the period of the internship, and up to CHF500 allowance for private travel is available during this period.

4). A settling-in allowance is given at the beginning of the term in the amount of CHF150.

Working Hours

Official working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 17:30 (8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.). Full time employment constitutes 35 hours per week. Individual arrangements to vary the set hours may be made in agreement with the General Secretary.

Overtime is not remunerated. Time worked beyond regular hours required as approved by the General Secretary is compensated by equal time off.

Annual Leave

Interns are entitled to 17.5 vacation days during their term (20 days annual leave pro-rated for the 10.5 months of the programme). This leave must be taken by the end of the internship year or forfeited. In addition interns are entitled to the following legal holidays:

Sick Leave

An intern shall be deemed to be on sick leave when she is unable to work by reason of sickness or injury or when undergoing medical examination or treatment.

An intern on sick leave shall notify their supervisor immediately. A medical certificate is required for any absence of more than three (3) consecutive working days.

Educational Allowance

An education study allowance of up to CHF 700 may be approved upon request within the first six months of the internship period. Hours of study out of the office hours will be compensated.

Chargeable expenses

For World YWCA travel, expense reports shall be submitted within 30 calendar days. Interns will be granted an advance to cover their travel expenses. The most economical means of travel shall be reimbursed.

Evaluation/Appraisal

The intern will be provided with a job description, will receive training and practical assignments during the 10.5 months of the programme and will function as part of the World YWCA office team. Each intern has an opportunity to suggest her own learning objectives in addition to those set for all interns. She will receive an evaluation and performance appraisal and she will have an opportunity to suggest changes and improvements to the programme.

If for any reason the intern is not able to fulfil the goals of the programme or if her participation or performance is unsatisfactory, the World YWCA may terminate the placement before the end of the 10.5 -month period.

Grievance

An intern must bring in writing, any grievance in the first instance to her supervisor. If the matter is unresolved, the General Secretary will be consulted.
