Afunky,self-professedly“funtastic”Pennsylvaniaamusementpark,Adventurelandappearstobethebaneofrecentcollegegraduate’sJamesBrennan’s(JesseEisenberg)existence.Hepreviouslyhadbigplanstospendthesummeronalife-alteringtrekthroughEuropethatwouldinitiatehimintorealadultlife.ButwhenhisfamilysuffersaneconomicdownturninthemiddleoftheReagan80s,James’onlysummertripisstraighttoaminimumwagejobmanningagameboothsoexistentiallybankrupt,nooneisevenallowedtowinthegiant-assstuffedpanda.

YetAdventurelandisn’tquitewhatitseemsonthesurface.Forbehindthecloyingcottoncandyaroma,thegratingdiscosongsandthenear-pathologicalcustomers,there’sawholeotherworldofmisfitfriends,hiddendreamsandmostincredibly,after-workencounterswiththealluringlysharp-tonguedarcadegirl,EmLewin(KristenStewart).AndwhenJamesdiscoversthehard-woncouragetogotobattleforEm,theresultisasavagelyfunnyyetsweetlyheart-feltandunexpectedencounterwith“realadultlife.”

It’samad,madworldofWhack-A-Mole,RootBeerPongandHorseDerby,butforJamesBrennan,thesweet,smartbutstrung-a-bit-too-tightlyheroofADVENTURELAND,hismortifyingsummerjobatAdventurelandamusementparkisabouttobecomeafull-scaleinitiationintothesublimeodditiesandwondersofadultlife.Forevenasheispropelledthroughagauntletofpaltrypaychecks,awkwardsituations,publichumiliationsandyounglust,Jamesgetsanexhilaratingfirsttasteoftruelovethatwillgivehimsomethingtobelieveinandfinallykickhisadulthoodintohighgear.

Theideaforamergingafacing-adulthoodcomedywithajob-from-hellhorrormovieandturningthecombointoafrankandfunnylovestorywithallthekickandsweetnessofapopsongcamefromthemind-nottomentionthepast-ofwriter-directorGregMottola,whohimselfworkedinaLongIslandamusementparkwhilegoingtoColumbiaUniversityinthelate1980s.

Sincethen,Mottolahas,ofcourse,takenadifferentcareerpath.Hecametotheforein1997bywritinganddirectingtheacclaimedindiecomedy“TheDaytrippers,”thewryrecountingofafamilyroad-triptounravelthemysterybehindashockingloveletter.ThatfilmwentontowintheGrandJuryprizeatSlamdance;theSpecialRecognitionforExcellenceinFilmmakingfromtheNationalBoardofReview;andnumerousotheraccolades.Mottolathenbeganafatefulpartnershipwiththehigh-flyingcomicteamofJuddApatowandSethRogen,directingseveralepisodesoftheirFoxtelevisionshow“Undeclared,”whichledinturntohisdirectingtheriotouslyraunchyyettrue-to-lifehighschoolcomedy“Superbad,”whichRogenwroteandApatowproduced.

WithADVENTURELAND,Mottolaheadsintoanevenmorerawandhoneststyleofcomedy,thistimebasedonthesweetlypainfultruthofhisownpost-collegecoming-ofage.“TheideacametomewhenIwastalkingwithabunchofwriterfriends,”recallsMottola,“andIwastellingthemtheseembarrassingstoriesaboutasummerinthe 80sthatIspentasacarnieworkingatanamusementparkonLongIsland.ItwastheworstjobI’deverhad,workinginaboothwherepeopleshootwaterintoaclown’smouth.Myfriend,JennyConnor,thoughttheywerereallyfunnystories,andshesaidIshouldwriteaboutthem.I’dneverreallyconsidereditbeforethat.”

Oncehebegantoexploretheidea,though,Mottolasawtherewassomethingthere,somethingbeyondjusttheabsurdityofahighlyeducatedyoungmanhandingoutstuffedbunniesandsubsistingoncorndogs.Hesawthepotentialforarousing,comiclovestory-onesetintherarelyexploredlimbobetweenthefasttimesofhighschoolandthedescentintoadultresponsibility,atimewheninnocenceandidealismareatbattlewiththerealitiesoflife,loveandearningaliving.

“It’saboutayoungguywhothinkshislifeissupposedtobesomethingelse,andwhathappenstohimwhenhefirstenterssomesemblanceoftherealworldinthisveryridiculousjob,”thewriter-directorexplains.“Themoviefitsintothisverysmallgenreofstoriesthatareabouttheworstsummereverturningintooneofthemosttransformativeexperiencesofyourlife.”

Throughoutwritingthescreenplay,MottolawasinspiredbyhisveryownAdventureland-theoneinLongIsland,wherehehimselfexperiencedseveralinitiatingencounterswiththetraumasandtriumphsofgrowingup,andfallingheadoverheels,onthejob.“WhatIlovedabouttheparkisthatitwasalittlerougharoundtheedges,akindofmisfitworld,andthat’sthefeelingIwantedtoretaininthestorytelling,”henotes.

Thatfeeling,redolentasitwaswiththehumorandachingtruthofearlyadulthoodandfirstseriousromanticrelationships,immediatelycapturedproducersTedHopeandAnneCareywhentheyreadMottola’sscreenplay.Withaloveoforiginal,iconoclasticvoices,HopeandCareymostrecentlyproducedtheaward-winning“TheSavages”andAlanBall’sscreenadaptationof“Towelhead,”andtheyhadbeenfollowingMottola’scareersincebefore“TheDaytrippers.”TheyweredrawntotheideaforADVENTURELANDanditsconversationalstylethatseemedtosowittilyandwarmlycapturethewayyoungadultsreallytalkand,evenmoreso,reallyfeel.

“Immediately,wewerebothtakenbythehumanityofthecharacters,”saysHope.“Althoughtherearealargenumberofmajorcharacters,theyeachhaveawonderfulandcompletearctothem.Greg’saestheticisaboutlovingandcelebratinghumanfoibles.Hedoesn’tmakefunofanyofhischaracters;hejustrevealstheirfaultsalongwiththeirappeal.”

AddsCarey:“Welovedthesenseofhumor,whichisbothsweetandsmartatthesametime.It'ssohardtofindhumorthatisn'toverlybroadorcoarseordumb,andthelaughsinGreg’sscreenplayfeltrealandfreshtous.”

ItwasHopeandCareywhosuggestedtoMottolathatheallowJamesBrennantobeanot-quite-ready-for-the-real-worldcollegegraduate.“Itwasaverygoodsuggestionandalsoentirelytrue,becauseIwasincollegewhenIworkedattheamusementpark,”commentsMottola.“Ishouldhavehadagoodjob-IshouldhavebeenatutororgonetoManhattanandbeenaninternatamagazineorsomethingrespectable-butno,Iwasworkingforminimumwage,handingoutstuffedanimalstodrunkpeople.Andthere’ssomethingaboutdoingthatwhenyou’renotreallyateenageranymorethatmakesitmoreunsettling.”

Afterdevelopingthescreenplay,MottolawasjustabouttodiveintoproductionofADVENTURELANDwhenhereceivedaproposition,onehecouldn’trefuse,fromJuddApatowaskinghimtodirect“Superbad.”HopeandCareygavehimtheirblessing.“Hetoldusitwasjustaminorjob,thatitwasnothing,”recallsCarey.“Hesaiditwasamovieaboutacoupleofguystryingtobuybeeranditwasn’tlikelytoamounttoanything.”

Asitturnedout,“Superbad”soonbecameoneofthebiggestandmostcriticallyacclaimedcomedyhitsinalandmarkyearofhitcomedies,laudedforitsnaturalisticabilitytocauseuncontrollablelaughterwhilecapturingtheanxiety-rattledrealityofadolescence.Yet,forallhissuddensuccess,Mottolastillyearnedtomoveontothepost-adolescentworldofADVENTURELAND,wantingtocapturethatineffablefeelingofthepointinlifeduringwhichminorcatastropheshavemajorimpactonthetrajectoryofyourlife.Thestorystayedwithhimlikeasongyoucan’tgetoutofyourhead.

“Ialwayswantedthismovietohaveabitofthefeelingofapopsong,”musesMottola.“Onthesurface,theemotionsthecharactersaregoingthroughmightseemincrediblycommonplace,almostsuperficial.But,atthesametime,thesethingsareenormouslypowerfulwhenyou’regoingthroughthem.Findingyourfirstlove,losingthatperson,beingdisappointed,beingdeeplydisillusionedbylove,gaininganunderstandingofwhatintimacyactuallyrequires-thesethingshaveahugeeffectonyourlife.InADVENTURELAND,Iwantedtogetatwhatthatallfeelslike,becauseit’ssomethingweallrelatetoandlaughabout.”

GAMESGAMESGAMESRIDESRIDESRIDES:MEETTHEEMPLOYEESOFADVENTURELAND

ADVENTURELANDbecomessuchanexhilaratinglyfunnyandemotionaladventureentirelybecauseofthepeoplewhoinhabitit-andfromthegetgo,GregMottolaknewthatcastingagroupof20-somethingswhowouldbewhollybelievableasmisfitsrelegatedtominimumwagejobsforthesummerwouldbeparamounttopullingthewholethingoff.

“Gregisreallygoodatfindingfacesthatarefreshandspecificanddon'tfeelatalllikethey'retypes,”notesAnneCarey.“Andbecauseof‘Superbad,’itwaseasiertoarguethatwedidn’tneedestablishedmoviestarsforthiskindofmovie-becausethecharactersandGreg’ssenseofhumorarethedefiningthing.”

AttheheartofthefilmhadtobeayoungactorwhocouldgiveJamesBrennan,litmajorturnedHorseDerbyoperator,amixofawkwardfretfulnessanderuditecharmthatwouldevokebothhisstuckpositioninlife,andhisunderlyingromanticism.ThatdescriptionseemedtobeaperfectmatchwithJesseEisenberg,therisingyoungactorwhogarneredanIndependentSpiritAwardnominationforhisbreakoutroleasakidtrappedinthemiddleofhisparents’separationinNoahBaumbach’s“TheSquidandtheWhale.”

“IthinkmyonlyhesitationwithJessewasthatIthought,well,hewassowonderfulin‘SquidandtheWhale,’he'skindofplayedayoungerversionofadirectorbefore!”saysMottola.“ButJesseissotrulygiftedcomicallyandincrediblysmart,thathegivesaverydifferentandoriginalperformance.JesseisinalmosteverysceneinADVENTURELAND,andhe’salwaysamazing.Hehasawayofdoingawkwardverywell,yetintheend,hewasamuchmoreflatteringversionofmyyoungerselfthantherealthing.”

EisenbergwasdrawntoJamesBrennannotonlyforhisinherentcomedybutforhisdownrightdecencyandsincerity.“He’sreallyjustabright,benevolent,sweetguy,”saystheactor.“Hecaresaboutotherstothepointwherehe'sstillavirginat22becausehe'sverysincerelywaitingfortherightsituationtocomealong.He’sathinkerandhe’sverycontemplative,oftentoomuchso. Andhehasthismixofbeingcleverandoptimisticyetmiserablethatisalotlikeme.”

Eisenbergcontinues:“WhatIlikedmostaboutJamesisthat,likeallthecharactersinADVENTURELAND,heissorealisticallydrawn,andalotofwhathegoesthroughfeelsrealbecauseit’sbasedontrueexperiences.”

DespiteMottola’sintimateclosenesstothematerial,hedidn’twanttooverlyinfluenceEisenberg’sperformance-andhegaveJessefreereigntocreatehisownportraitofhowJames’feelingsforEmfinallypropelhimtodotheonethinghe’sneverreallydoneyetinlife:actboldly.“Gregwasveryencouragingtome,andhewouldsharelittleanecdotesfromhispastsometimes,buthewasalsoquitemysterious,”recallsEisenberg.“He’snotoneofthosedirectorswho’sconstantlytalking.Instead,Ithinkthat,havingchosentheseactors,hewasverycontentedtoletuseachdowhatweneededtodo.”

PerhapsthebiggestthrillforEisenbergwasgettingtobethechronicstraightmaninacastofdiverselyquirkycharacters.“Itwassomuchfunbeingaroundalltheseincrediblecomedians”henotes.“IwasthankfulIdidn’thavetocompetewiththem.Sincemycharacterissupposedtobetheonewho’sgroundedandreal,Icouldjustenjoythemwithouthavingtrytoliveuptotheiroutrageousness.”

MikeConnell/RyanReynolds:

WhenJamesstartstofallforthesharp,worldly-wisearcadegirl,EmLewin,hefindshimselffacingahighlyunlikelyromanticrival:Connell,whoissimultaneouslyAdventureland’smaintenancemanand,duetoawidespreadrumorthatheoncejammedwithLouReed,alsothepark’slow-rentversionofalocalrockstar-idolizedbytheboysandsoughtafterbytheladies.

ToplayConnell,GregMottolachoseRyanReynolds,whoseperformancesinsuchfilmsas“NationalLampoon’sVanWilder”and“Smokin’Aces”haveestablishedhimasaquicklyrisingcomictalent.Still,ReynoldsnotesthatConnellisunlikeanyoneelsehe’splayedbefore.

“IwasdrawntoConnellbecausehe’salittlebitoutofmywheelhouse,”saysReynolds.“He’sablue-collarguywhoworksatthislowlyparkanddreamsofgreenerpastures.He’sacelebritywithinthecontextofAdventureland,butthatjustbasicallymeanshecanplaytheguitar.Sothere’ssomethingfunnyaboutthesituationbutthere'salsosomethingreallyheartbreakingabouthimtome.Connell’sAchillesheeliswomen.He’saromanticbutinthenegativesense. Idon'tthinkofhimasnecessarilyabadguy,butthisinfatuationhehaswithromanceandfallinginloveisclearlyadetrimenttothosearoundhim-particularlyhiswife,whoobviouslyhasherhusbandoutonloan.”

Hecontinues:“WhatIwasdrawntoisthatthewholestoryislikethat.It’sacomedythatcutsdeeper.It'saboutpeoplethatarediscoveringthemselvesinthemidstofthekindsofrealproblemsthatrealpeoplefaceandknow.”

Therazor-tonguedyetirresistiblykind-heartedEmLewin-whoMottolaconfessesisbasedona“compositeofafewex-girlfriends”-isplayedby17year-oldKristenStewartwhowascatapultedintotheranksoftoday’smostsough-afteractresseswithherleadingrolein“Twilight”andherrivetingscenesoppositeEmileHirschinSeanPenn’s“IntoTheWild.”

AlthoughStewartisactuallyyoungerthanthecharactersheplays,sherespondedviscerallytothecharacter,immediatelylatchingontoEm’svolatilemixofsexualmaturityandemotionalnaiveté.ForevenasEmisfishingforlostquartersinthearcade,she’salsosearchingforwhatherconfusedheartreallywants. “Icertainlydon’thavethesamelifeexperiencesEmhas,butIfeltIcouldrelatetosomethinginher,”saysStewart.“AndknowingthatshewasbasedonrealpeopleGreghasknown,IfeltabigresponsibilitytogeteverythingaboutwhosheisandheraffectonJamesacross.”

Asforwhatadaring,angry,experiencedgirllikeEmseesinashy,anxious,virginalguylikeJames,sheobserves:“There’ssomethingaboutJamesthatiswonderfullyinnocent-andEmissopastthat,Ithinkhisattitudeisjustdisarmingtoher.Jamescomesalongrightatatimewhenshe’sinvolvedinsomethingverycomplicatedthat’sfilledwithallkindsoffeelingsofguilt-andwhathappensbetweenthemisverysweetandsimpleandreal,whichiscompletelynewtoher.”

MottolawasalsoexcitedtoseeStewarthavethechancetorevealsomeofhercomicchops.“I’vealwaysthoughtshehadaverymysteriousqualityandsheexudesintelligence,butshealsocanbevery,veryfunny,”henotes.“She’soneofthoseactresseswhoIfinddeeplyfascinatingtowatchonthescreen.”

JesseEisenbergsaysthechemistrywithStewartwascompletelyorganic:“She’ssonaturalandrealistic.It’sshockingtoseesomeonesoyoungcomeacrosswithsomuchmaturity.”

Starrwasluredtotheproject,inlargepart,bythechancetoworkwithMottolaagain.“WhenIreadthescript,itdidn'tfeellikeamovie.Itfeltlikeaclipoutofsomeone'slife,”hesays.“IalwayslikeworkingwithGregbecausehe’soneofthemostcompassionatedirectorsI'veeverworkedwith.Andit’snicetoseethathe'sgettingtomakethethingsthathewantstomakenow.Thisisverymuchhisstoryandhisvisioniswhatmakesitsocompelling.”

HaderandWiigultimatelydevelopedthedynamicofaditzy,passivePaulettewhowatchesanover-enthusiasticBobbyrunningaroundtryingtokeepAdventurelandgoingbyanymeansnecessary. “Bobby'stheonedrivingeverything,tryingtofigureitallout,”explainsHader,“whilePauletteislobbinginthecraziness.”

“Andyet,they’rebothidiots,”confirmsWiig.

ForJesseEisenberg,workingwithHaderandWiigwasalmostpainful-inagut-bustingway“Theyweresofunnyitwasnearlydifficulttoworkwiththem,”helaughs.“Theyreallyprovidedthatmixoftraditionalcomedicelementswiththefilm’ssenseofrealism.”

TommyFrigo/MattBush:

AnotherlovablyidioticfigureinJames’lifeisTommyFrigo,James’childhoodfriendturnedsweatband-sporting,ball-bustingprankster.Tocasttherole,Mottolaheldauditions,ultimatelybecomingentrancedbynewcomerMattBush,whowillnextbeseeninKennethLonergan’s“Margaret.”

BushmadetherolehisownbyfindingsympathyforFrigo’speskyways.“Frigomightcomeoffasajerk,butmyfriendsandIinhighschooldidthesamekindsofthingstoeachother.Wewouldmesswitheachotherallthetime,butthatwasjusthowwehadfunandwestillthoughtofeachotherasbestfriends.IthinkFrigo'sthesamewaywithJames,”hesays.“Hemightdothingsthatseemkindofmeanbutthat’sbecausehereallylikesJames.That’sjustthewayheconveysit.”

BillHaderwasimpressedwiththeenergybetweenBush,StarrandEisenberg.“Theymakeagreatcomicteam,”heobserves.“Justwhenyouseethemtalkingtogetherontheset,theyhavethatperfectrhythm.”

Adventureland’smostlusted-afterbeauty-theelusiveLisaP,showsheraffectionforJamesinamorestraight-forwardway:askinghimoutandwreckinghavocwithhisalreadyconfusedromanticintentions.Mottolasearchedforanactresswhowouldhavetheinstantaneoushead-turningeffectofasexpotyetjustenoughdepthtoseesomethingrealinJames,andfounditinMargaritaLevieva,aRussianémigréandformerOlympicgymnastwhowaspreviouslyseeninthesupernaturalthriller“TheInvisible.”

Levieva’sauditionwasunusualfromthestart.“Itwasafunnymeeting,becausemyagentscalledmeandtoldmeIhadtomeetthisdirectorrightnowbecausehiswifewasgoingintolabor,”sherecalls.Threemonthslatershegotaformalauditionandwonthepart.

TheveryideaofplayingLisaPappealedtoLevieva.“ItwasjustsoexcitingbecauseI’veneverplayedacharacterlikeherbefore,”shesays.“She’ssomeonewholivesinherownworld.Shehearsthemusicandjustdances!Shedoesn'tcarewheresheisorwhoislooking.Fromadistanceshemightseemobnoxious,butitwasfuntotrytomakeherrealandhuman.IthinkdeepdownLisaPreallywantstobeapartofthesmart,caringgrouppeoplelikeJames,butshe’snotsureifshehasthestufftopullitoff.”

Levievawasalsothrilledbytheensembleofyoungcomicactorsthatsurroundedher.“ThiswasmyfirstcomedicfilmandIfeltsoluckytobewithsomanybrilliantlyfunnypeople,”shesays.“ThethingaboutGreg’scastingthoughisthatthecharactersaren’tjustfunny,they’rereallyhumanandhebroughtinactorswhocouldbringthattolife.”

OneofthemostoffbeatcharactersinADVENTURELANDisn’tahumanbeingatall,buttheamusementparkitself,withitsslightlytawdry,occasionallythrilling,alwaysquirkyambiance,whichsetsthetoneforJames’summerjourneyintoandoutofromanticlimbo.

NotesTedHope:“GregMottolaalwaystalkedaboutAdventurelandbeingthiskindofplacewhereatonemomentitmightbefilledwithscreaming,pukingkidsandallkindsofrancidpeopleandthesamesongsplayingoverandoveragainuntilyourearsbleed;andthenext,thelightwouldstarttodim,asoftsummerbreezewouldriseup,yourfavoritesongwouldcomeonandsuddenlythegirlyou’vebeennervousaboutfordaysiswalkingtowardsyouandeverythingismagical.That’sthefeelinghewantedinthemovie.”

Togettothatfeeling,though,he’dhavetofindtheparknotofhisdreams,butofhismemories.Sadly,theactualAdventureland-theoneinFarmingdale,NewYork,whereMottolaworkedasaColumbiastudent–hadlongsincebeenrenovatedalmostbeyondhisrecognition.“IthadacompletelydifferentfeelingthantheplaceIremembered,”saysMottola.

ThismeantthatMottolawouldhavetosetoutonaquesttofindthatrareamusementparkwhichhadretainedthat80sfeeling,onethathadanurbansettingbutfewmodernamenities-noeasyfeatinanageofincreasinglyhigh-techandcross-marketedparks. “Alotofamusementparksareverycorporatethesedays,”observesMottola.“TheyhavealotofcartooncharacteraffiliationswithDisneyorWarnerBrothers,andwedidn'twantthat.Wewerelookingforthatoneamusementparkthathasn'tchangedmuchovertheyears.”

Ultimately,Mottola’ssearchwouldtakehimtotheindustrialcityofPittsburgh,Pennsylvania-whereMottolahadattendedCarnegieMellonasanundergraduate-andKennywoodPark,oneofjusttwoamusementparksontheNationalRegisterofHistoricplaces.Foundedin1898,KennywoodhassurvivedtwoWorldWarsandtheGreatDepressionandmadeitintothe21stCenturywithitscoasters,gameboothsandindependentspiritintact.

Mottolaquicklyfellinlovewiththeplace.“KennywoodwasimmediatelyattractivetomebecauseIhavealotofaffectionforPittsburgh,”hecomments.“It’sdefinitelyamuchnicerparkthantheAdventurelandIremember,butitwaspreservedenoughandsospaciousthattherewasroomforustomakeitalittlegrungier,tobringinourowndilapidatedboothsandgarbageandcreatetherougherlookofAdventureland.Theparkwasverygametogiveusourowncornersandletuschangethings.”

AddsTedHope:“Idon’tknowifwecouldhavemadethismovieifKennywooddidn’texist.Whereelsecouldwehavefoundanamusementparksometiculouslymaintainedthatwecouldshootaperiodpiece?Whereelsecouldwehavefoundanamusementparkthatwasn’tcorruptedbyblatantbranding-yethadthatatmosphereofold-fashionedfun?Loandbehold,Kennywoodhaditall.”

OnceKennywoodmadethecut,MottolaquicklyembracedPittsburghasalocationandasJames’newhometown. ““Pittsburghisareallyinteresting,photogeniccity,soitfeltliberatingtomakethedecisiontostaythere.BehindKennywoodisoneofthelastoperatingsteelmills.It’spartofthecity’sfabric,andthingslikethataddtothelookandfeelofthefilm,”saysthedirector.

ShootingatKennywooddid,however,presentitsownbevyofchallenges.Filminghadtostraddlesummerandfall,takingplacewhentheparkwasstilloperational;andnoridecouldbeturnedonwithoutbeinginspectedandclearedbyaKennywoodrepresentative,eveniftherideonlyappearedinthebackground,withnoriders.

Forthecasthowever,theplayfulatmospherewasperfect.“Itwassuchafunenvironmenttohavealltoourselves,”saysKristenStewart,whoproudlyconfessessherodetheJackRabbitrollercoastermorethanahalfdozentimesduringproduction.

“Ilovedshootingattheamusementpark,”echoesJesseEisenberg.“Ithinkitlooksreallycooltowatchanintimatesceneinthemovieandseeallthesecrazy,colorfulthingshappeninginthebackground.Itmakesthescenesthatmuchmoreinteresting.”

ProductiondesignerStephenBeatrice(whosefilmsinclude“TheWoodsman”andtheforthcoming“InterviewsWithHideousMen”)usedthepark’smostAdventureland-likefeaturesmixedwithMottola’smemoriestopropelthesetsbacktothe1980s. “WeusedthingsinKennywoodthatwouldbevisuallyappealing,”saysBeatrice.“WealsousedseveralexistinggameslikeSpilltheMilk,GoneFishin’,andTheShootingGallery.Butweweren’tabletofindanygamelike‘HatsOfftoLarry’thatexisted,sowecreatedthoseourselves,”saysBeatrice.“MyartdirectorandIdrewsketchesaccordingtowhatGregtoldus.Thenweaddedflavor,puttingourownspinonit.”

AfterfillingtheAdventurelandparkinglotwithFordTempos,ChevyCelebrities,ReliantKcar-nottomentionJames’Pacer-itseemedthatthehandsoftimehadbeensuddenlyinched2decadesbackwards...allthewaybackintotheReagan80s.

Mottolawasgratifiedtoseehismemoriessuddenlycomebacktovividlife.“Ialwayswantedthefilmtohavea‘youarethere’feel,likeyou’regettingintoatimemachinetogospendasummerinAdventureland,”hesays.“Thereareafewmorestylizedmoments,butIthinkthecastandcrewsucceededincreatinganaturalisticfeelingthatputsyouintheparkwiththem.”

BeatricealsousedotherPittsburghlocations,includinganabandonedbarinthestripdistrictthatstoodinforRazmatazz;andJodiB’srestaurantwhichstoodinfortheVelvetTouch,whereJamesandLisaPhavetheirfatefuldate.HecollaboratedcloselywithdirectorofphotographyTerryStacey(“TheDoorintheFloor,”“PSILoveYou”)inforgingapalpablerealismthataccentuatesthehumannessofthecomedy.

“Weusedlightinginawaythatenhancesthenaturalmoodofascene,”explainsStacey.”Theideawastocreateafeelingthat’snottoostylized,that'sgotjustalittlemoregrittoit.It'salmostlikea‘70sfilmbutprettier.Wewantedthecameraandthelightingtolooklikethey’rejustworkingtotellthestoryinatrueway,notstandingout.Itwasverymuchaboutworkingwiththeenergyofeachscenetocreateanaturallook.”

Whenitcametothe80scostumes,Mottolaalsowantedtostayrelativelynatural-whilebeingupfrontabouttheover-the-toptastesoftheera.“Icertainlydidn’twantthelookofthefilmtobejustacheapjokeattheexpenseofthe 80s,”hesays,“buthavingsaidthat,onceyoustartputtingpeopleinacidwashjeansandgivingthemasymmetricalhaircuts,itgetsprettyridiculous!”

“Thepastalwayshasawayoflookingoutrageous,”hecontinues.“Butwetriedtoavoidparodyandlettheaudiencefeelliketheyarethere,20yearsago,inthelivesofthesepeople.”

Todoso,costumedesignerMelissaTothdoveintoanostalgicbuttrue-to-the-eragrabbagofcrimpedhair,fuzzyleggings,“Flashdance”-inspiredtops,day-glocolors,haremandstirruppants,sweatbands,tubesocks,and,naturally,lotsofbighair.

Forinspiration,TothpouredoveroldSearscatalogsandyouthfulfashionmagazines,suchasSeventeenandPeople,anddidquitealotofresearchonYouTube,thelatestandgreatestsourceforoldmusicvideos,TVcommercials,andhomevideos.Havinggraduatedfromhighschoolin1986,shealsousedherownyearbooksandmemoriesforguidance.Then,sheraidedthriftstoresandcostumehousesinsearchofauthentic80sgear.

TothandMottolaalsoworkedtogethertocreatetheemblematicAdventureland“GamesGamesGames”and“RidesRidesRides”t-shirtthatplaysarecurringroleinthefilm.“Intheendwewentwithadesignthatreflectedthereal‘Adventureland’t-shirtthatGregworeasayouth,”saysToth.

Theyalsodevelopedspecificideasforeachcharacter.“WewantedEmtobenotafolloweroffashionatall,sowekeptherlookmoreontheclassicside,withabitofarock-n-rollflavor,”notesthecostumedesigner.”ThesamewastrueofJames,whoisn’ttrendyanddoesn’thaveasstrongofan80slook.”

However,the 80shavedefinitelyaffected,orafflicted,Joel,FrigoandLisaPForFrigo,whosesignaturelookwascomprisedofshortshorts,sweatbands,muscleshirtsandgoldchains,Tothtookapageoutofherownpersonalhistory.”Inmiddleschoolweallusedtowearbaseballshirtswithournamesironedonthefrontinfuzzyletters,andsomesloganontheback,”shesays.“ItoldGregaboutthisandhecameupwithsomehilariousideasforFrigo’sshirtsayings,whichbecameagreatpartofthemovie.”

MargaritaLevievasportedsomeofthemorehilariouslytrendyoutfitsinthemovieasLisaP,andhadablastwithit.“OnceIagreedtoplayLisaP,IknewIwasgoingtogofullforcewithherfashionsense,”saystheactress.“IespeciallylovetheturquoisedresswiththesefootballplayershouldersshewearsonherdatewithJames.”

PlayingPaulette,KristenWiighadtorockhigh-waistedacidwashjeansandscrunchies.“ItbroughtmebacktowhenIgrewup,”shesays,“andtherealizationthattherewasjustalotofbad,badfashion.”

Meanwhile,BillHader’sbiggest 80sfashionstatementintheroleofBobbywashisample,darkmustache,whichwasGregMottola’sidea.“Themustacheiscrazy.It’salmostacharacterinitself,”laughsHader.““Weweregoingtodosomeotherthings,butthemustachejustsaysitall.”

EvenashewaswritingADVENTURELAND,MottolawashearingthesoundtracktoJames’life,soakedthroughwithpopsongs,80srockandclassicpowerballads,inhishead.Hepopulatedthescreenplay,thesetand,ultimately,themovieitself,withwall-to-walltunesfromtheera,tunesfromLouReed,TheRollingStonesandDavidBowie,aswellasiconiccutsfromamixofindiebands,rangingfromTheReplacementsandCrowdedHousetoNickLoweandTheCure;tohardrockers,includingTheNewYorkDolls,WhiteSnakeandJudasPriest;allthewaytoTop40hitmakersFalcoandWangChung.

ProducerTedHopebroughtinmusicsupervisorTracyMcKnight-whosepastfilmsincludeLasseHalstrom’s“TheHoax,”JohnPolson’s“Tenderness”andthehitdocumentary“Murderball”-totacklethemassivetaskofcompilingandlicensingdozensupondozensofhigh-profile,vintagesongsonanindiebudget.

McKnightsaysshewelcomedthechallenge. “Iloveataskthatseemsgargantuanandimpossible,”shesays.“Itupsyourgameanditpushesyou.AssoonasImetwithGreg,Iunderstoodthathehadaverystrongvisionofthemusic,thatitreallymeantsomethingtohim,andIdidn’twanttolethimdown.”

Shecontinues:“Theideawastofillthemovieend-to-endwithmusicthatreallypullsyouintotheworldofAdventurelandandintoJames’personalworld.Gregwantedthemusictobeveryauthentic-torepresentwhatyoumighthearatanamusementparkbutalsowhatyouwouldhearontheradioandwhatcoolkidswerelisteningtointhe80s.Thatmeantreachingouttosomeofthebiggesticonsoftheera-theRollingStones,DavidBowieandLouReed-andchasingaftermassivehitslike‘RockMeAmadeus.’”

Whenitcametodealingwithartistsknownforkeepingtightcontrolovertheirsongs,McKnightusedtheonlytoolsshehad:apassionforthefilmandsheerperseverance.“Iapproacheditwitha‘neversaydie’attitude,”sheexplains.“WeknewweregoingafterrealiconswithBowie,LouReedandtheRollingStones.Ittookus7monthstocleartheRollingStonessongbutwehadtohaveit,becauseitwasoneofthefirstthingsthatGreghadwrittenrightintothescript.Everyonesaiditcouldn’tbedonesoitwasarealfist-pumpingdaywhenweclosedthedeal.Itwasjustsonicetoseeapieceofmusiccomethroughthatwasattheheartofthisproject.”

Assheapproachedtheartists,shealsoencounteredalotofenthusiasm.“Thanksto‘Superbad,’alotofpeoplewerealreadyreallyexcitedaboutGregsothathelpedalot,”McKnightsays.“Forexample,whilewewerenegotiatingtheRushsong,theytoldus:‘we’renotgoingtosaynotooneofourfavoritedirectors.’”

Ultimately,some40differentsongswerewoventogetherwitharock-basedscorebythebelovedHobokenindietrioYoLaTengo,whosince1984,havereleasedmorethan20albums,garneringbothcriticalaccoladesandadevotedfollowing.
