The Friends of the High Line

The High Line is a public park that is maintained by the Friends of the High Line. It opened to the public in 2009. It spans almost 1 ½ miles of elevated railway track on the west side of Manhattan. Over eight million people visit the park each year. The park is divided up into several gardens, and each garden has a specific planting makeup, layout, and maintenance plan. Gardens range from woodland, grassland, to wetland-inspired. There are also regularly changing art installations and special programs.

Managing Hundreds of thousands of plants is no small feat, and it’s up to the gardeners to maintain the vision of garden design.

You will be assigned to work on one of two projects; both of which combine GIS (GPS-type spatial information) with plant and maintenance data:

Perennial Plant Record Database
·  We currently have each tree, shrub, and vine stored as a point feature (a GPS dot on a map).
·  Data on those perennial plants is not directly connected to the plants, it is stored at the plant bed level.
·  All of this is challenging because of plants, weather, are constantly changing.
·  We would like a database that provides a place for the spatial data for individual groups of perennial plants, and the plant details to be stored one database. / Irrigation Planning and Maintenance Database
·  The High Line has an extensive network of irrigation throughout the plant beds.
·  The gardeners need a way to see which areas of the park contain which plants so they can set the automatic watering schedule.
·  The maintenance staff needs to a way to keep track of the condition of each part of the system.
·  We would like a database to combine plant details with irrigation system data and maintenance records.
