Name the APSE Newsletter Contest

Thank you for participating in the Marketing and Communications Committee Name the APSE Newsletter Contest. The APSE Newsletter is sent out quarterly and the next issue will be mailed to our members in January. The committee is looking for suggestions for a name for our quarterly newsletter that aligns with what we stand for - Association of People Supporting EmploymentFirst.

What does the Acronym APSE Stand for?

The Association for Persons in Supported Employment (APSE), started in 1988 as an advocacy and membership organization with a mission to expand supported employment nationally. Through the years APSE grew, and our mission expanded to include integrated employment for all citizens with disabilities. At the 2012 National APSE Conference, the APSE Board agreed that we should link the letters to what we stand for – so now everyone can proudly state – ASPE stands for the “Association of People Supporting EmploymentFirst”!

What is Employment First?

Employment First is a declaration of both philosophy and policy stating that: Employment is the first priority and preferred outcome of people with disabilities. APSE’s statement on Employment First states that employment in the general workforce is the first and preferred outcome in the provision of publicly funded services for all working age citizens with disabilities, regardless of level of disability.

What does “employment in the general workforce” mean?

Employment in the general workforce means regular jobs, integrated within the general workforce, working side-by-side with co-workers or customers without disabilities, earning minimum wage or higher with commensurate benefits.

Why Employment First?

The U.S. Department of Labor states that the workforce participation rate for individuals with disabilities is about 1/3 that of people without disabilities. The low employment rate for people has been increasingly recognized as a serious societal issue, with over 13 million adults of working age in the United States receiving disability benefits from Social Security. Yet it has been continuously shown that with assistance, accommodations, and encouragement, many more people with disabilities can work successfully in the community. For more information on Employment First, see our white papers and policy statements at apse.org.
