Dear Parents/Guardians:

In May, students will be taking their NYS Math Examination. This examination will focus on their computation and word problem skills. It is important students are completing their homework every night, getting a good night's sleep, and eating a healthy breakfast each day. Students should also be practicing their times tables often. We are confident our students will give their very best effort on these exams! Thank you for your cooperation and support.

-Grade 4 Team

Mathematics: In our math unit, students will be focusing on area and perimeter of quadrilaterals, geometric shapes and lines, as well as various types of measurement. Students will continue to solve multi-step word problems and are practicing organizing their math work so that their answers make sense. Students will also be preparing for their NYS Math Exam. Test preparation is an important part of the school day. Students will be using old state exams and resources to practice their test taking skills, math computations, and word problem skills

English Language Arts:Students will be using their reading and writing skills while exploring our Social Studies Unit. The social studies unit focuses on New York State history. Students will explore the many features of NY, discuss how it became a state and and learn about its first inhabitants all while answering the question, “Who can claim New York?” Students will be writing to persuade and inform and engage in debates all while using text evidence and details to help support their claim. This unit is creative and fun and allows for students to express themselves through debating and writing. Students will also continue to read chapter books in “book clubs” and answer questions and prompts about the texts they are reading. Scholastic news will continue to be used to explore and analyze current events.

Physical Education with Mr. Reynolds: Students will be working on Racquet skills. Students will have their own racquet and work on balancing the ball and using their hand/eye coordination to hit the ball. Students will learn about all racquet sports, including tennis, badminton, and Ping-Pong. May: Students will be working on Hockey skills. Students will be learning about the game of hockey and how to hold a stick and hit the ball the correct way. The older students will learn and play “game like” situations and the younger students will work on holding the stick and moving around the gym, hitting objects that are on the ground.

Music with Ms. Brigida: Students are playing guitars at an intermediate level: reading chord diagrams, chord progressions and playing songs. Each week, students learn new songs and work independently at their own pace. The focus of music class is to allow students to practice their instrument and make improvements each week. If your family owns a guitar, encourage your child to play for you.

Science with Ms. Sass: For the months of April and May our fourth graders will be continuing to explore water and how it affects our earth. In addition, they will be reviewing and preparing for the state Science exams at the end of May and the beginning of June. Have your child study vocabulary words several times a week so they are fully prepared. (I will send out a list of words they should know). Please contact me if you have any questions.

MyOn Reading with Ms. Simpson:Students have been comparing and contrasting descriptions of the underground railroad and focusing on the codes that the slaves used to escape from slavery. Parents at home can explore interest in the system of slavery by taking their children to the library to search for additional information.

Library with Ms. King: There are so many great Spring stories to read. Want to learn about Daylight Savings? How about Seeds & Flowers? Baby Birds and Bunnies? Health & Nutrition? Search on Destiny or ask Ms. King to help you find your JUST RIGHT READING level in our Non-Fiction section. All students at PS 204 are encouraged to spend time at the Sedgewick Library. Ms. Marlene & Ms. Sallie are the librarians in the children's section at the library. There are so many programs that take place after school and during the weekend. I encourage you to take a WALK, BREATHE SPRING FRESH AIR, and spend time at the local library. As we continue to learn about the world we live in, students continue to learn about the GREAT state New York, people, careers, and places in the community, as well as other countries, customs, and cultures through our fantastic Social Studies read alouds. These read alouds use the Think, Wonder, and Share model. It is so great to see the connections the students are making, hearing the engaging conversations, and learning from one another.

Estimados Padres / Guardianes:
En mayo, los estudiantes tomarán su examen de matemáticas del NYS. Este examen se centrará en su cálculo y habilidades de problema de palabra. Es importante que los estudiantes estén completando su tarea cada noche, obteniendo una buena noche de sueño y comiendo un desayuno saludable cada día.
