2016-2017

1. ATTENDANCE - Students will meet all requirements outlined in the existing attendance policy in regards to school attendance, tardiness and cutting class. More than 12 absences without an excuse, and/or 3 cuts for the year, may result in a loss of credit, and the student will have to repeat the class.

2. CLASS PARTICIPATION - Physical Education is required by state law. All students must take and pass 4 years of Physical Education to meet graduation requirements. Students begin each marking period with 100 points. Point deductions will be made for unacceptable behavior and failure to comply with existing department rules.

The following point deductions may apply:

a) Class cut 10 points

b) Refusal to participate 5 points

c) Unprepared 5 points

d) Tardy to base attendance 5 points (late without pass after 10 min)

e) Unsafe behavior 5 points

f) Lack of “honest” effort during

warm-ups or activity 4 points

3. MEDICAL EXCUSES- A DOCTORS note is the only legal excuse from participating in Physical Education. This note must indicate specific dates and reasons. If the medical excuse is for more than ½half of the marking period, the student will receive an ”M” grade for that marking period and will lose 1.25 credits. Dr’s notes do not have to be made up, but must be on file no later than 2 weeks prior to the end of the current marking period. A PARENT or NURSE’S note will excuse the student for the day, but these classes must be made up. PARENT notes are good for only 1-3 days. Failure to do so will result in a loss of 5 points.

4. MAKE-UPS - Loss of points (make-ups) can ONLY be accomplished after school. Make-up days will only be Tuesday or Thursday (unless posted otherwise due to scheduling issues). Students will be required to complete a fitness run on our course. Students must report no later than 2:20 to the small gym area and the teacher who is supervising that day. Students will be given a 3:40 late bus pass if necessary.. Any class make-ups are to be completed one week prior to the mid point and/or one week prior to the end of the marking period. Any zero’s obtained in the first half of the marking period CAN NOT be made up after the mid-point. 2 pts will be given per make-up . Class cuts cannot be made up.

5. UNIFORM - Each student is responsible for being properly dressed for Physical Education. Proper dress includes: shorts, sweats, warm-ups, full “T” shirt, sweat shirt, socks, and sneakers. Sneakers must be tied at all times. Jewelry, tank tops (are not permitted). Bandanas and hats are not permitted indoors. School Issued Athletic game Apparel/Uniform is NOT to be worn during a Physical Education class.

6. LOCKS / LOCKERS - Each student will have access to a small locker for their P.E. clothes Each student must rent a school lock for $5.00. This money is refundable upon graduating or leaving the school district. Non school locks will be cut and removed. Lockers or Locker combinations should not be shared with anyone. Varsity lockers will be assigned by the coaches and must be vacated at the end of the season. Depending on certain periods and staffing, Varsity Lockers will not be accessible to students during PE classes. Each student is responsible for putting their own book bag in the cage area. DO NOT bring valuables to the locker room. MRHS is not responsible for valuables.

7. X-GRADES - An “X” grade may be given to a student who decides at any time during the year that he/she is presently passing Physical Education and that he/she does not have to dress or participate in class anymore.

8. GENERAL GRADING SYSTEM -

Each student will start each marking period with 100 points. Using this method, every student could possibly wind up with an “A” plus at the end of the marking period, providing he/she:

(1) Is not Late for attendance.

(2) Does all the exercises the teacher assigns and with an honest effort.

(3) Follows all instructions given by the teacher for the duration of the period, including our fitness walk/run.

(4) Participates to the best of his/her ability in the activity of the day. (Standing in one spot, with folded arms, talking to classmates during any activity is unacceptable.)

9. Personal Belongings - The school will not be held responsible for lost or stolen items. Having a lock does not do any good if students do not lock them or leave belongings in their book bags which are usually left on the ground.

10. Freshman Physical Education – all freshman students will be involved in our new curriculum where they will participate for a 2-3 week period in the following activities which cover NJ Core Content Standards:

Adventure/cooperative games, Lifetime activities, Dance/movement, Fitness activities, Personal performance, Team sports, and Racquet/net sports. This cycle will last approx. the first 2 marking periods. Beginning with the 3rd marking period freshman students will be allowed to enter into our elective activity schedule.
