In Attendance: Dr Ruth Gorinsky, Lyn Scott. Mark Larson welcomed “first-timers” and introduced Ruth and Lyn.

Graham Preston welcomed members and drew attention to the quote in the conference handbook attributed to King Solomon – “Education is your life, guard it well.” The meeting opened with prayer.

Chairman’s Report:

Graham Preston tabled his report and highlighted the following points:

  • Acknowledged the on-going support and help from the Executive.
  • Encouraged members to “stand tall” and continue in their work as a “sub-set” of APIS.
  • Thanked Jocelyn MacKinnon who retires from the Executive.

Executive Director’s Report:

Mark Larson presented his report.

  • Mark advised that the meeting with the Minister of Education, the Hon Hekia Parata, had been rescheduled due to time pressures for the Minister. The meeting will take place on 14 August. Other items of note:
  • AIS is maturing as an organisation, but remains firmly in partnership with APIS as the lead organisation, acknowledging the rights and privileges that brings in the delivery of special character education. AIS has different needs.
  • As an organisation, we must ensure that integrated schools remain an affordable option with their own distinctives, but contributing more to the Minister’s strategy for education.

Treasurer’s Report:

Cherie Wildon presented her report. Some points to note:

  • Sponsorship is down and this is a reflection on the state of the economy.
  • Thanks to all organisations for their continued sponsorship.
  • The distribution of Earthquake donations was greatly appreciated by the beneficiaries at Christchurch schools.
  • There is a large surplus and the policy for utilization of this is posted on the website. Alternatively, members can approach any member of the AIS Executive to see the Policy.

Elections:

Sue Fordyce took over as Chair of the meeting for the confirmation of Committee members

Jocelyn MacKinnon who was not seeking re-election was thanked for her valuable contribution to the Association and wished well for her “retirement”.

This is a very strategic role and there is a need for succession planning.

General Business:

Report given on the “decision in principle” of the Judgement of the High Court review of how Attendance Dues may be used. A very lengthy document. Further information will be available to members very soon as to what can be claimed from Attendance Dues.

Graham reported there had been a review of the Property Handbook for Integrated Schools There is a group working with Pat Lynch on this.

Strategic Planning Retreat – 9 October 2012 – This meeting will consider strategic planning for the next 3 years. Mark Larson encouraged everyone to be involved. He will send out a survey monkey within the next month or so with a number of questions.

Information from “Roadshows” – Mark Larson reported that he had little information at present re property in member schools. It was acknowledged that this is a sensitive issue and was possibly something for proprietors to consider.

Presbyterian Special Character School in Auckland CBD – Rev Doug Lendrum (first time conference attendee) advised that he had been in negotiation with the Ministry of Education for the last 12 months to establish a Primary School (420 pupils) in the Auckland CBD on the site of St David’s Presbyterian Church.

Earthquake Fund – Aaron Donaldson, on behalf of Hillview Christian School, thanked those who had contributed to the fund, and recorded the School’s appreciation as a beneficiary.

There being no further business the meeting closed at 11.35 am.
