Monday Unit 22 Syllable Division

PR Unit 22 December 2-20, 2013

Monday---Unit 22 Syllable Division

Lesson 1

Skill: Pattern VCCV

Students will learn there are rules to follow when dividing words into syllables.

Students will unlock polysyllabic words with the VCCV pattern.

Teacher will ask what is a syllable? A syllable is a word or part of a word with one talking vowel. A word has as many syllables or parts as talking vowels.

Students will learn the vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel pattern.

Teacher will model the steps for syllabication using the word (hello).

Students will learn the five steps for syllabication.

1.  Underline the talking vowels and mark them with a [v].

2.  Swoop between the talking vowels and pull down the consonants between the vowels.

3.  Divide the word according the pattern (VCCV).

4.  Check the position of the vowel and mark the vowel sound.

5.  Blend the sounds together to unlock the word. (Remember the final e is called a magic e and is silent and not a talking vowel.)

Teacher and students will practice dividing words into syllables using the following words: sister, stampede, insect, whisper, mistake, blanket, suppose, trombone, dentist, after, silver, temper.

Students will read and write the words and sentences from page 22-9.

Oral Reading: “It’s a Northern!” Students will listen to the teacher on the first reading, second reading students will read with the teacher and third students will read orally without teacher. Students will read the story by popcorn reading.

Spelling List: until, after, picnic, dinner, basket, open, silent, paper, became, become

Lesson 2

Skill: Pattern VCV

Students will learn there are rules to follow when dividing words into syllables.

Students can learn to unlock polysyllabic words with the VCV pattern.

Teacher will tell students this VCV is a new pattern and is called vowel-consonant-vowel pattern and is often divided after the first vowel.

Teacher will model this VCV pattern using the word (music).

Teacher and students will practice dividing words into syllables using the following words: carpet, paper, open, beside, corner, and begin.

Wednesday--- Unit 22 Syllable Division

Lesson 2

Skill: Pattern VCV

Students will learn there are rules to follow when dividing words into syllables.

Students can learn to unlock polysyllabic words with the VCV pattern.

Teacher will tell students this VCV is a new pattern and is called vowel-consonant-vowel pattern and is tricky because it can also be divided after the consonant.

Teacher will model using the steps on the following word (closet).

This pattern is tricky you should always try to cut after the vowel first. That is why you first put a dotted line. When you blend the word together, if it doesn’t make a real word, adjust. Draw a dotted line after the consonant. The teacher will model using the word (cabin).

Teacher will recite out loud the VCV dividing rule: “The VCV pattern is first divided after the vowel. If that doesn’t work, divide after the consonant.

Students will recite the VCV dividing rule.

Teacher and students will practice dividing words into syllables using the following words: target, broken, summer, silent, market, frequent, jumbo, finger, never, chipmunk, forgot, menu, and jello.

Thursday---Students will read and write the words and sentences from page 22-25 and 22-26. Students will orally practice reading the words and sentences independently and with partners.

Oral Reading: “It’s a Northern!” Students will listen to the teacher on the first reading, second reading students will read with the teacher and third students will read orally without teacher. Students will read the story by popcorn reading.

Teacher will give a quiz over the story “It’s a Northern!”. Teacher will ask questions and have students to think pair share and then we will circle the answers on the story.

Spelling List: until, after, picnic, dinner, basket, open, silent, paper, became, become

Students can read library books and take AR Tests the reminder of class. Students may be allowed to go to the library if it is opened.

Friday---Lexia Reading Lab (9:00-9:45)

Spelling Test over: until, after, picnic, dinner, basket, open, silent, paper, became, become

Students can read library books and take AR Tests the reminder of class. Students may be allowed to go to the library if it is opened.

December 9-13, 2013

Monday---Review Unit 22 Lesson 1-2 Steps for Syllabication

Students will come up to the white board and take turns using the five step syllabication rules to divide the following words into syllables.

Teacher will write the word up for the students to divide into syllables. Teacher will check to make sure all students are writing it on paper too.

Please use the following words: hello, sister, stampede, whisper, mistake, suppose, trombone, dentist, after, silver, temper, insect, blanket, music, carpet, paper, open, beside, corner, begin, closet, cabin, target, broken, summer, frequent, jumbo, menu, never, silent.

Word Wall Review---Students will read the words and sentences out loud in class as the teacher points to the words and sentences.

Red Word Wall Review---Students will read the red words out loud as the teacher points to the words.

Teacher will pass out the story “Rover” to the students. Please have students put the story in sheet protector in their binders.

Oral Reading: “Rover” Students will listen to the teacher on the first reading, second reading students will read with the teacher and third students will read orally without teacher. Students will read the story by popcorn reading. Students will take a quiz on over “Rover” on Tuesday.

Spelling List: Students write and read the following words in class: subtract, pilgrim, contrast, hundred, explode, landscape, instruct, lampshade, ostrich, comprehend

Tuesday---Unit 22 Lesson 3

Skill: Pattern VCCCV

Students will learn there are rules to follow when dividing words into syllables.

Students will unlock polysyllabic words with the VCCCV pattern.

Students will recall the five cutting patterns. Teacher will write them on the board.

In this lesson you will learn a new cutting pattern. It is VCCCV (vowel-consonant-consonant-consonant-vowel). In this pattern you divide after the first consonant.

Teacher will model using the word (subtract).

Teacher and students will practice dividing words into syllables using the following words: pilgrim, contrast, infrequent, hundred, comprehend, explode, ostrich, and lampshade.

Students will take a quiz over the story “Rover”. Teacher will read it with students. Students will read together with a partner. Students will popcorn read. Teacher will ask questions and have the students think pair share and answer the questions. We will circle the answers on the story.

Oral Reading: “Insect Charmer” Students will listen to the teacher on the first reading, second reading students will read with the teacher and third students will read orally without teacher. Students will read the story by popcorn reading. Students will read together with a partner.

Spelling List--- subtract, pilgrim, contrast, hundred, explode, landscape, instruct, lampshade, ostrich, comprehend

Wednesday---Unit 22 Syllable Division

Lesson 4
Skill: Pattern VCCCCV

Students will understand words are divided by use of patterns.

Students will learn to divide VCCCCV words after the first consonant.

Students have learned the following patterns: VCCV, VCV, and VCCCV. Students will tell teacher where do we divide the patterns.

Teacher will tell the students that this pattern rarely occurs because there are so few consonant clusters. A consonant cluster is three consonants clustered together. There are only four in our language: str, spr, spl, scr. Keep the consonant cluster together when dividing the VCCCCV pattern. IF the word is a COMPOUND WORD divide between the words. Teacher will model (landscape and instruct).

Students can recite the patterns and the rule for dividing each pattern.
