1 Chairman’s Comments

There is much for Striders to look forward to in April, which sees the highlight of the year for many, the Virgin London Marathon. Those Striders who have places can be certain that they will receive plenty of support from the club’s travelling supporters, many of whom will be making the early start to travel down on the club coach to experience the full marathon atmosphere (and of course the pub breakfast). Three Striders will be running with club places, and they have all shown great commitment to their cause, proving that they are truly deserving of their places.
There are also several Striders entered into the new Milton Keynes Marathon at the end of the month, a reminder that there are other marathons than London. It should not be forgotten that all marathons are the same distance, and every one is the culmination of months of hard work put in by those taking part. Therefore, the club tradition of taking photographs of our London runners with their medals and finishers t-shirts will also be extended to any marathon. If you complete a marathon, please bring your medal and any other memento to one of the monthly socials, and your picture will be taken for the website. I expect that Dave Hall alone will keep our photographers busy.
This month will also see the start of our Annual Beginner’s course. Any offers of help will be very gratefully received.
Finally, it is very pleasing to see that the club has made an excellent start in the County Championships in the Sandy 10. Well done to everyone involved.

7 Running Report by Bill Barrett and Karen Ashby for events February 2012

Sunday 4th Louise Peters, Terry Willis, David Sarong and Tara Armstrong all recorded PB’s in the Milton Keynes half marathon. Louise was also first lady in the race and also recorded a new club record!

Dawn Willis ran the Milton Keynes 5k recording a PB in her first race!

Sunday 11th Phil Nitchen and Chris Caddy ran P.B.’s in the Leighton Buzzard 10k. We also had a scoring men’s team who came third which consisted of Adrian Copp, Derek Christopher and Chris Caddy! Well done to them.

Caroline Savine, Patrick Cosgrove, Kim Willis, Zena Ellis and Cheryl McLaren all recorded P.B. runs in the Silverstone half marathon. For Kim, Zena and Cheryl it was their first half marathon and for Cheryl it took every last bit of strength and determination to complete the event! (Check the photos out on the web site – Cheryl is so impressed!!) Well done to you all!

Friday 16th Phil Abbitt ran the Jerusalem half marathon, and Pam ran the 10k.

Saturday 17th Dave Hall ran the Exmoor Ultra 40mile event.

Sunday 18th Matt Crossland ran the Baldock half marathon.

Sunday 25th At least sixteen Striders ran the County Championship Sandy 10 miles with eight running P.B. times (it must be the weather). We also had an excellent day in the County Championships. Liz Rollinson ran her first 10 mile race and won the female vet 40 category. Linda Thomasson was 1st vet 45, Dianne Blackmore was 1st vet 50 with our own ladies captain Karen Ashby 2nd vet 50. For the men Derek Christopher ran a vet 60 club record in winning the County Championships vet 60 and Bill Billington again was 1st vet 70.

There were P.B. runs from Liz Davies, Tracey Barrett, Chris McLaren, Phil Nitchen and Terry Willis, so an excellent day for the club and also brilliant to see so many people running well so early in the year. It proves they have put in the work during the winter. Hopefully they will all keep the hard work going now and should end up with a summer full of P.B.s.

Sunday 25th Andy Ward ran the Barcelona marathon.

Saturday 31st Amanda Rankin and Pam Abbitt ran the Olympic Park 5 mile run.

Once again it has been a very good month for the club. An important date in the running calendar is the County Championships Oakley 20miles on

April 1st. We would like to say good luck to all our marathon runners as most of them will be running Oakley.
