Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 8:07 a.m.

Minutes

A motion by Kam Capik to approve the minutes of Wednesday, February 15 with the correction of the spelling of Linda Sappington’s name from Sapping was seconded by Lane Ronnow. Voting was unanimous in the affirmative by board members present.

Arts Commission Report

Kam Capik shared her report from the Arts Commission held Thursday, February 23, 2017 (see attached) noting in particular the availability of the RAP tax application – now online.

New Business:

·  Board members are encouraged to attend – and invite others to attend – Twila Abrams 3rd Thursday Art Conversation on Thursday, March 16, 7 p.m.

·  Board members are also encouraged to spread the word about the upcoming performance of the Vista School Orchestra, a 20/20 event in the courtyard of the Pioneer Center for the Arts, on Monday, March 20 at 6 pm.

·  There was a brief discussion on other 20/20 events. The singles group event will take place on May 19, 2017. The Teens Take the SGAM will be held on June 16, 2017. Steve Brough to find a group – perhaps the St. George Youth City Council – to oversee the event. Kam Capik accepted responsibility to coordinating the Date Night event on July 14, 2017.

·  Linda Sappington will talk further with Linda Lowe to see if she is willing to chair the Boo Ball event in October.

·  Kathryn Alldredge, who suggested the pumpkin carving activity, will be approached by Deborah Reeder to chair this event.

·  Steve Brough will research and come prepared to share his findings on the Winter Solstice event in December – the final event of the 20 for 20 anniversary year.

Old Business:

·  Soup N’ Bowl – what worked? What didn’t?

-  The bottom line of $6,075 for this event was very good, but with only 149 attendees, it was sponsors who made the difference. Thanks to Zions Bank for their $500 sponsorship and for their in-kind contribution of soup.

-  Umbrellas are needed for the outside tables.

-  It was awkward to have the dessert table between the kitchen and the door into the dining room. In the past, desserts have been “delivered” to tables.

-  Grab bag bowls sold out early. Need more next year.

-  Too many volunteers in the kitchen. Organize next year’s volunteers a little better. Lynnda Biek to chair is she will accept the assignment.

-  All board members bring containers for leftovers.

·  Other

-  Stinson’s (who volunteered in the kitchen) to be approached to consider serving on the board.

-  Other prospective board members to consider: Ferron Holt, Rob Schmidt, Roseanne Tiegen.

Director’s Report:

·  See attached.

·  Pay special attention to the “20 for 20” events

Adjourned:

The meeting adjourned at 9:03 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Sappington, Acting Secretary

Notes

St. George Art Commission Meeting - Thursday, February 23, 2017 7:30 a.m.

City Arts Grants -

The Arts C. has $15,000 left to grant by the end of June.

We reviewed the Grant request from the Warbird Museum and awarded them

$1,100.

Discussion Items -

St. George Jazz Festival - The event was held last month and was very successful. 400 to 500 attended in seven different bands. There were great clinics for students, and a wonderful guest artist. Happy with this first time event. Next year it will be Feb 9 and 10: Friday for Junior High Schools, Saturday for High Schools. It will need better advertisement.

Sweetheart Swing - This was also a successful event in February. It went very smoothly. Next year they need more volunteers to stay and help clean up at the end of the evening.

Business of Art Series - The next one will be held March 9 “Find your Niche”

2017 RAP Tax Grant update - Application is now online. We will review the requests at a meeting.

2017 - Award of Excellence Nominees - Names were discussed to honor this year:

Floyd Rigby, Ilene Hacker, Summer Belnap, Candy Fowler. The two selected will

be honored at a City Council Meeting in April. Need to find individuals to speak

in behalf of the honorees.

2017 St. George Arts Festival - Will be held April 14,15. The members of the Arts Commission will meet at 10:00 am on the 14th to select an award winner.

Other arts related ideas:

·  The Smith’s mural was to be discussed at a meeting that afternoon.

·  The City is moving Visitor Information Center to the old Chamber of Commerce

Building. Ken Sizemore will head up that new location.

·  Justserve.org - you can post a need for help or look for things to do.

·  There will be a Youth Concert Classic and reception for Gary Caldwell (March 3)

·  Art Around the Corner recommended the purchase of four pieces of sculpture.
