HOLLOWELL SAILING CLUB

MINUTES OF MEETING SAILING COMMITTEE MEETING

7.30pm in the Club House

Wednesday 18 May 2016

Present:Brian Atkins, Simon Bickers, Tony Everard, Clive de la Fuente, Paul Mallard, Peter Jackson (APMYC), Simon King (Chair & minutes), Ivor McDonnell, Peter Shepherd (APMYC)

  1. Apologies: Larissa Barker, Will Buckland, Derek Bunting, Stewart Elder, Tim Joint, Keith Lancaster, Graham Smith, and Nicola Wilkinson.
  2. PREVIOUS MINUTES: The minutes of the previous meeting held on 23 February were read and proposed by Tony Everard and seconded by Simon Bickers. All agreed these as a true record.
  3. MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES:

3.1 Club Development Plan – no further progress to report. The committee agreed that something needs to be done to plan the further development of the club but this required a significant exercise which members of this committee had only limited time to carry out.

  1. FLEET CAPTAIN REPORTS

4.1.Asymmetric double-handers - Brian Atkins reported that the new club kit and boatare expected to make a difference to fleet activity. However, the older club boats are in a bit of a mess. [ACTION: Repairs by Thursday wrinklies?]. Another training day is planned for during the year (no date as yet) – possibly a RS200 coaching day run by the class assoc which might be opened to other clubs in the area. [ACTION: Brian to organise].

4.2.Symmetric double-handers – David Harris – no report.

4.3.Handicap Single-handers – Tony Everard said that the list of members owning and sailing single hander dinghies (and others?)needed to be updated [ACTION: Simon B. to send out fleet lists to fleet captains to update]. This is particularly important so that fleet captains can send out messages to ALL RELEVANT fleet members about upcoming coaching, e-news etc.

4.4.Solo Fleet – Keith Lancaster sent his apologies but has reported that the Solo Open has been promoted and manning levels are in place to run it. There will also be some training from Keith and Gerry and he will also try and get a Solo assoc coach to run a session later in the year for fleet sailors.

4.5.Laser Fleet – Simon Bickers reported that a training session run by Simon Cray and Andy Baker had 6 people on it – considered a success but with 50 Lasers in the fleet he was looking at ways of getting more fleet members engaged. Laser Open is coming up – still short of Solo fleet members to run the day. Simon B. to amend the NOR.

4.6.Sailboard Fleet – Paul Mallard reported that the Windsurfer Open went well but fleet numbers arenow low. There is a general decline in numbers nationally so not surprising our club sees dwindling numbers. At the Open Day there was some interest with 3-4 adults having a taster. A further taster session is planned for June but at present there seems to be little interest. Clive said that based on current levels of interest in windsurfer training the club may not renew our Windsurfing training accreditation.[ACTION: Clive to update at next SC mtg].

4.7.Youth Fleet – Ivor McDonnell reported on successes of the junior fleet:

4.7.1.Cransley AWS had 10 boats from HSC – the biggest contingent. Our own event is coming up [ACTION: Ivor to organise coaches, SK to prepare Sailwave file]. Prizes as usual provided by NSSCA. Entry to be £8 per sailor.

4.7.2.RYA zone squads – the club is developing their young sailors well but we are unlikely to have any ready to represent the club in squads this year.

4.8.Hollowell Scullers Rowing Club – Tim Joint sent his apologies but has asked for the trial of Sunday morning coaching sessions (to be off the water by 10am), and outside of Junior Coaching days, to continue until the Scullers can submit a formal proposal to the SC at our next meeting. After discussion, all agreed that these sessions had had no major impact on Sunday racing and that the trial could continue until the next meeting where a decision would be taken. [ACTION: Tim to submit a formal proposal at the next SC mtg].

4.9.Canoeing– Ivor McDonnell reported that there seems to have been few members actually canoeing and therefore nothing really to report.

4.10.APMYC –sent a report – see attached.Peter requested a date tohost the 2017 MYA Midlands District Championship event for Six Metre Yachts at Hollowell SCin late October 2017. They need agreement in principle to get it into the MYC calendar for next year. The committee agreed this in principle as Saturday sailing is normally finished by then. [ACTION: APMYC to submit the final date for 2017 so we can include it in our own calendar preparations later this year]. [Post meeting: Peter came back to me in June proposing Saturday 28th October 2017 – committee needs to agree this is still OK].

  1. Sculler’s proposal for “Sunday morning early rowing” –Tim had not been able to prepare a proposal for this meeting – see 4.8 above.
  1. Vacancies

6.1.Child Protection Officer/Prizes Secretary – Will Buckland has resigned from the role of CPO and Prizes Secretary citing family commitments. The committee had a vote of thanks for all the excellent support he has provided over the years.[ACTION: SK to talk to Rob, who apparently has alternatives lined up to replace Will for both of these jobs and will report back at the next SC mtg]. It was suggested the vacant roles could be advertised in e-news.

  1. 12-hour race organisation on the 29th May – discussion was held around lessons from last year’s race and improvements for this year. Rob is DO, assisted by Stewart. [ACTION: Rob and Stewart to review and update risk assessment as required].
  1. 50th Anniversary Family Fun Day on the 5th June – SK reported that the organisation is all in hand with a Team competition planned. Not sure of numbers expected but posters have been put up in the club house and on the website.
  1. New member’s day on the 11th June – Mike Pipes is believed to have this in hand.
  1. Open meetings (NOR, publicity)
  2. Laser Open – 19th June – Solo fleet members have been unable/unwilling to come forward to help support running this event. [ACTION: SK/Keith to encourage support personally]
  3. Anglian Water Series – 25th June –organisation is in hand. Coaches being organised by Ivor.
  4. Topper & Optimist Open – 2nd July –organisation is in hand.
  5. Warwick Trophy – 4th September – Date has been changed by NSC to the 11th September. SB as captain to organise HSC team.
  6. Iced Tankard – 23rd October – a brief discussion of whether we should have a Vintage craft prize – not supported by the committee.
  7. Cransley Tiller & Spar –nothing to update. [ACTION: Simon B. to progress discussions with Cransley and Banbury when convenient]
  1. Don Howard Trophy 27th/28th August – no time to discuss and decide the format for this event but as Sailing Secretary SK said he would take a final decision and inform the final format to club members via the website and the e-news.
  1. Duty Man – Stewart has sent his apologies with the comment that there wasn’t anything major to report.
  1. ANY OTHER BUSINESS
  2. Graham Smith requested approval to hold the Midlands Area RYA Zone selection training event at HSC on the 1st October. The committee noted a conflict with a programmed event but there was some doubt this would actually be going ahead. [ACTION: SK to check with all parties and revert back to Graham]
  1. DATE OF NEXT MEETING – Tuesday 6th September 2016 at 7.30pm

The meeting closed at 11pm with thanks to all.

Report to Hollowell SC 18/05/2016 by Peter Jackson

We have held three open meetings and one club only event at Hollowell SC since the last Sailing Committee Meeting. These were:

  • 27/2 Six Metre Open
  • 12/3 RG65 Club Competition
  • 23/4 Wee Nip Medal Open
  • 30/4 Extreme Footy Series Open Act 3

We had a good turnout of skippers at the Open Day where we made our boats available to visitors and Hollowell SC members to have a go at radio sailing. We were kept busy all day and have since had enquiries from two new members about joining through APMYC.

Three APMYC members attended a two day Power Boat 2 Course run by Stewart Elder which he graciously held it on a Thursday, helping us considerably as otherwise we would not have been available until later in the year due to our racing commitments.

We only intend to use powered boats for model recovery during strong wind conditions when it is considered safer to use them as opposed to the row boat.

We need to finish some maintenance on the oars and to make a frame to cover the dingy, which is ongoing work and should be completed shortly.

We have now refurbished one of our Wee Nips (101, Black & White) with intention that it is used as an introductory boat to allow any Hollowell Members and others to try a taster of Radio Sailing. All are most welcome to come along and use this boat.

Just contact Peter Shepherd first on either 07891818661 or

Away from Hollowell SC, APMYC members have been racing in a number of events that count towards the MYA's Acersail initiative elevating the club into fourth place out of 75 clubs in the table.
