Background

In class you have been learning about ratios and how they can be applied in real life. In this task, you are required to do the following:

1.  Use the ratio skills you have learnt to modify a caramel slice recipe

2.  Determine the size of each piece of caramel slice that needs to be cut

3.  Make your modified recipe


Task 1: Determining the size of each piece of caramel slice

The caramel slice recipe will be modified in two different ways because two different size trays will be used. Below are the details for each tray.

TRAY 1

·  Size of tray is 30cm by 20cm

·  Modify the recipe to make 40

TRAY 2

·  Size of tray is 32cm by 24cm

·  Modify the recipe to make 48 slices

a)  Write down which tray you have been allocated by your teacher.

b) Using the information for your tray, work out the size (length and width) that each piece of caramel slice will need to be cut. Show all your working out including any diagrams.

Task 2: Modifying the recipe

Caramel Slice

Makes: 30

Ingredients:

·  120 g butter

·  1 tbs golden syrup

·  3 tbs brown sugar

·  3 tbs condensed milk

·  250 g biscuits

Method:

STEP 1 Crush biscuits minus 3-4 and set aside.

STEP 2 Mix together butter, golden syrup, brown sugar and condensed milk.

STEP 3 Microwave for 2-3 minutes at 30 second intervals until mixture is hot and bubbling.

STEP 4 Add crushed biscuits.

STEP 5 Press into slice pan to set.
