Most days will have this format. However, on assessment days the block may be modified. Each topic should have at least one opportunity for the Three Part Problem Based Lesson with a performance task.

Three Part Problem Based Lesson Plan

Before: Getting Reading
(5-10 minutes)
·  Be sure that the task is understood
·  Establish expectations
During: Students Work
(30-45 minutes-depends on the task and age of students)
·  Let go!
·  Listen! This is a good time to get formative assessment.
·  Probe for more complete answers. Give a hint: How do you know you are right?
·  Don’t let students know you have a pre-determined way of solving the problem.
·  Use anticipated response sheet for monitoring for understanding and for sharing in the summary
·  As you walk around, choose who will share and in what order... 1st, 2nd, next? Why?
·  Give sharing students time to prepare sharing out with the whole group (oral rehearsal)
After: Class Discourse
(15-20 minutes)
·  Accept student solutions without evaluation.
·  Conduct discussion as students justify and evaluate results and methods.
