To contribute to the delivery of high-quality clinical care, to lead research and contribute to teaching activity, scholarly with administration, in a manner that goes beyond that expected of a Senior Lecturer.
This is achieved by:
  • Making significant research contributions to the field nationally and internationally
  • Leading the Severe Asthma service
  • Making innovations in key aspects of teaching and learning
  • Contributing to the administration of these and other College activities
The Reader/Professor is expected; to be strong in clinical respiratory medicine and expert in asthma, strong in research and may also be strong in administration; or to be strong in teaching and administration but less strong in research or equivalent scholarly activity. Such contribution will be sustained over a period of years.
A.Academic (5 Programmed Activities)
  • Research:
  • To acquire resources and financial support in order to develop and direct an independent research programme into asthma, respiratory medicine and inflammation, complementary to the overall research strategy of the William Harvey Research Centre, Institute and School, and of the Trust Directorate.
  • To be a member of, and to develop collaborative research (basic, translational or applied) that contributes to the development of, the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research and its linkage to the planned Asthma UK Centre in Mechanisms of Asthma
  • Clinical interface- to provide academic leadership to colleagues in respiratory medicine
  • Fit with the WHRI Centre strategy: Inflammation research stream
  • To develop and maintain national and international research links and a high profile in the subject or field, e.g. by attending and presenting at national and international conferences.
  • To publish research results using well-regarded means, such as reputable publishers, or high impact factor peer-reviewed academic journals and conference proceedings.
  • To play a leading role in the Centre’s/Institute’s regular research group meetings, to attend laboratory and journal club meetings, weekly seminars, audit meetings, etc.
  • To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students engaged in research, postdoctoral research workers and research assistants, as appropriate.
  • To ensure that all research is undertaken according to College and Trust protocols.
  • Any clinical study proposals must comply with the School’s and Trust’s policies and procedures and, in particular, must be registered with the School and Trust’s Joint Research Office. Research proposals must be submitted through the School’s Research Deanery and the Trust’s Ethics committee, and all costings and overheads agreed in advance with the School and Trust’s Joint Research Office.
B.Clinical Duties (5 Programmed Activities)
We are looking for an experienced senior Clinician with a strong Academic portfolio to co-lead the Severe Asthma service at the St Bartholomew’s Hospital after the departure of Professor Neil Barnes. A background of working within the Asthma, Allergy and Airway fields is preferable. The post consists of 5 Academic and 5 Clinical Programmed Activities (PAs). The Clinical component of the post is open to negotiation, but Direct Clinical Care sessions are likely to include the following (see draft Job Plan below). All sessions are located at the St Bartholomew’sHospital unless otherwise specified.
•Weekly Severe Asthma clinic including admin time
•Weekly Severe Asthma MDT meeting
•Alternate week Airways or General Respiratory clinic including admin time
•Daily review of inpatients with Severe Asthma (role shared with Dr Ali)
•Alternate week Ward round of Acute Respiratory Admissions (Royal London Hospital)
•Respiratory Consultant non-resident on call 1 in 10 (Trust wide)
•Weekend review of Acute Respiratory Admissions and selected inpatients (Royal London Hospital) 1 in 10
Supporting Professional Activities PAs will include 1 Core SPA to cover Statutory and Mandatory Training, Appraisal and Job Plan planning and sessions, CPD, clinical teaching and training, and supervision of trainees. Further SPA time will be allocated for the Clinical Governance activities within the department and to support any additional non clinical activities that the post-holder would like to pursue in line with the departmental objectives and Job Planning process. The ratio between DCC and SPA for the 5 PA Clinical component is therefore likely to be approximately 3.5:1.5. Additional Programmed Activities may be available in negotiation with the Clinical Director and reviewed at the yearly Job Planning session.
The post-holder is required to have and maintain full registration and regular revalidation with the General Medical Council. Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of the medical defence organisations. An honorary consultant contract with the Barts Health NHS Trust will be provided.

Teaching
Organise and undertake teaching in the School/Centre as agreed with the Head of the Centre for Biochemical Pharmacology; this includes providing lectures, classes, and seminars, in a variety of combinations.
