Welcome to the Lay Ministry

Learning, Leading and Communicating. These are some of the things that define the role of the laity in the United Methodist Church. The laity has a rich heritage in the UMC and an effort is on to bring integrity and understanding of the call to the laity. Unfortunately, many laity associate Lay Leader or Lay Speaker as someone who fills the pulpit when asked by the pastor. Although this is an important ministry, it does not apply to all laity and certainly is not the only area of ministry the laity plays in the UMC. Being actively involved in our communities in helping with food pantries, nursing homes, after school programs, mission teams, senior centers, etc. is a vital call to the laity.

We on the Franklin District are striving to help you grow and mature in your call to ministry. This year courses are offered that will help us to grow in the areas of Leading, Learning and Communication. These are essential areas for us to share Jesus Christ with our communities and church family.

Course Descriptions

Basic Lay Speaking

(Rev. John Bargar, Rev. Richard Carlson &

Rev. Dayton Mix)

The lay speaking basic course focuses on the many ways lay speakers are called to be in ministry in such ways as preaching, leading, teaching, serving, proclaiming the gospel, disciple-making and growing through personal spiritual formation. Completion of the basic course is required for anyone wishing to become a certified lay speaker.

Go Preach-

Advanced Lay Speaking Course

(Rev. John Emigh and Rev. Eric Leonard)

This course offers insightful information on how to write and prepare sermons. The lay speaker will receive instruction on how to research, interpret scripture and put together a sermon. Students will have the opportunity to present the sermon to the class.

Must have previously taken the Basic Lay Speaking course.

United Methodist Heritage

(Rev. Jim Kimmel)

Text: Living As United Methodist Christians: Our Story, Our Beliefs, Our Livesby Andy and Sally Langford

We will explore what it means to live as "United Methodist" Christians, journeying together to hear and to claim the Christian story as well as distinctive United Methodist emphases and beliefs. Most importantly, we will also talk about how to put our hands and feet to the faith we claim as United Methodists.

Worship Well, Worship Faithfully, Worship Creatively

(Rev. Mary Ann McConnell and others!)

There are many ways to worship. This class will explore ways to improve any style of worship. We will also explore worship planning in different settings including traditional sanctuaries, fellowship halls, and nursing homes. Several instructors will display both their planning techniques and the outcomes of their planning. If you care about doing your worship well, you will be sure to take home something new to use.

How to become

a Lay Speaker

The United Methodist Church recognizes two types of Lay Speakers:

†  Local Church Lay Speaker:

Approved to speak at his or her home church. A Local Church Lay speaker first must pass the Basic course.

†  Certified Lay Speaker:

Approved to speak at all United Methodist Churches. A Certified Lay Speaker first must pass the Basic, and Preaching courses. To maintain certification a Lay Speaker (both local and certified as of 2008 Book of Discipline) must take at least one additional course offered by the District Lay Ministry Training School during successive three-year periods.

Recertification is

required every 3 years.

For detailed requirements and duties of a Lay Speaker, see your Pastor and the United Methodist Book of Discipline 2008 Section XI, Lay Speaking Ministries, paragraphs 266, 267, and 268.
