August 2016

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our 6th grade Common Core 6 math class and science class! I am looking forward to working with your children emphasizing problem solving skills, study habits and organizational skills.

In math we will be covering the 6th grade California Standards as we move through the textbook. Your child can expect daily math homework.

Sixth grade science will focus on Earth Science and we will investigate plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, weathering and erosion, weather and earth’s resources. Science homework will be assigned when appropriate for the material being covered.

Guidelines for a successful 6th grade year for your son or daughter include:

·  Writing all assignments in their planner.

·  Turning in homework when it is due – late work is not accepted.

·  Completing all math work in pencil.

·  Cheating/plagiarism is not tolerated and will result in a Fail on the assignment and a “U” in work habits.

A total points system for grades is based on the following percentage scale:

90 – 100 A

89 A-

80 - 88 B

70 - 79 C

60 - 69 D

59 and below Fail

Grades will be posted on the Nobel website (nobelms.com). Your student is expected to write down the assignments in their Nobel Student Planners. Homework is to be turned in when due; late assignments are not accepted. Exceptions are made for absences; one day of grace is allowed for each day of absence.

Work habits grades are based on completed assignments, quality of work and class participation. Cooperation grades are based on following class and school rules. A “U” in work habits will be given for too many missing assignments. Parent signatures are required on all tests and a “U” in cooperation may result when tests are not returned with a signature.

Daily attendance is very important. Work missed due to absences will need to be made up. Missed tests will be made up, but missed quizzes will not be. Instead the next quiz taken will be given twice the point value. Your child

should have a “buddy” in class and should exchange phone numbers in order to find out what assignments or tests were missed. Assignments and projects will also be posted on my webpage found on the Nobel’s website.

I will be available for tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays before school starting at 7:20 a.m. and at nutrition.

I have a homework assignment for parents! You can help me get to know my students a little quicker by taking a moment to email me about your child. What is your 6th grader like? What are the things you, as a parent, know that would be important for me to know about your child? What are your child’s interests? Please email me your response at . You may use this email address to contact me throughout the school year.

Please join us at Back To School Night on Wednesday, August 31 at 6 p.m.

I am looking forward to a great year!
