PURPOSE OF THE JOB

This role is for a one year fixed term appointment in the first instance, in order to enable the curriculum to be developed and to provide time for a structural review of the leadership and management within this area.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

1 Curriculum Development Activities

1.1 Lead and take responsibility for the development of the business and uniform public services curriculum, working with and across all management teams. This curriculum area, requires further modernisation in order to ensure that it is up to date, innovative, fit for purpose and meets/keeps abreast of industry standards and consumer requirements

1.2 Develop an integrated curriculum with clear progression pathways from Level 1 to Level 7. Working with the Head of the sector the post holder will be a catalyst in developing the curriculum in readiness for the new academic year in order to deliver the sector’s vision.

1.3 Ensure the delivery of high quality learning experiences to all students and promote high standards of teaching. Undertake such formal scheduled teaching, tutorials and student assessment, management of learning programmes and curriculum development, student admissions, educational guidance, counselling preparation of learning materials and student assignments, marking of students’ work, invigilating and marking of examinations, management and supervision of student visit programmes and administration as appropriate

1.4 Be part of a leadership team, developing and innovating the curriculum and its progression map

1.5 Facilitate and support curriculum innovation and change and act as a mentor to others involve in teaching and learning

2 Teaching and Related Activities

2.1 Teach on college premises or off site. Undertake student induction, tutorial work, associated outreach work, residential, open and distance learning work and student work placements

2.2 Undertake associated organisational/administrative work, together with preparation and marking associated with timetabled work

2.3 Undertake related appropriate student selection, welfare and academic counselling

2.4 Advise students of the college provisions available from the Personalised Learner Support Services Directorate

3 Curriculum Development

3.1 Through the course teams, participate in the identification of consumer requirements, plan, develop, monitor and evaluate courses and course materials to ensure they keep abreast of industry requirements and respond to market needs

3.2 Work with relevant curriculum teams to facilitate and support strategies to raise retention and achievements of learners

3.3 Work with individuals and teams to promote the development and shared use of a range of high quality teaching and learning materials to contribute to learning resources

3.4 Promote proactive course and curriculum development, including the application of Information Technology

3.5 Be a member of appropriate Directorate and cross college forums

3.6 Participate in open events, student experience days and summer enrolment activities as required

4 Performance Management and Professional Development

4.1 Participate in the Appraisal Scheme and undertake in service training based on an agreed assessment of individual and service needs

4.2 Act as a teaching and learning mentor to colleagues, especially those new to teaching and those in areas with poor inspection grades

4.3 Work with individual lecturers to facilitate and support the improvement of standards of teaching and learning within the curriculum area

5 Leadership/Management Administration

5.1 Be part of the sector leadership team, specifically development of the curriculum

5.2 Undertake the leadership and development of those working with you in the curriculum team

5.3 Participate in the organisational and administrative work of the appropriate course teams(s)

5.4 Carry out staff timetabling as appropriate

6 Assessment of Vocational Competencies

6.1 Undertake assessment of students’ vocational competencies within the College, at the students’ places of employment and placements as appropriate and necessary

7 Computerised Management Information System

7.1 In collaboration with course team colleagues, other appropriate Directorate staff and the CIS section, ensure that accurate, complete and up to date data is input onto the corporate database and other information storage and retrieval systems

7.2 Comply with the Data Protection Act

8 Safeguarding

8.1 Understand and comply with Safeguarding legislation and ensure that best practice is embedded in all working practices as required

8.2 Commitment to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, ensuring that this commitment is demonstrated in all aspects of the role as appropriate

9 Health & Safety

Hours of Work

The hours of work for this post will not normally exceed 36 hours per week.

Salary

This post has been evaluated on Scale 38 of the Lecturing Scale. This currently equates to £43,173 per annum plus £1,812 London Weighting.

Salaries are paid monthly on the 25th of every month or the last working day prior to the 25th if the 25th falls on a weekend or bank holiday. The only exception to this is for the December payment, which will be on an earlier date that will be notified to you on an annual basis. Payment will be made direct into a bank/building society account. You will need to provide details of your branch, account number and sort code before payment can be made to you.

Annual Leave

35 days per annum and all Bank and Public Holidays normally observed in England and Wales. The College also shuts for an additional 5 efficiency closure days plus 3 statutory days which the Principal will set at the beginning of the academic year. Although every effort will be made to meet requirements for Annual Leave, service demands will take preference. All leave is subject to an efficient service being maintained and specific restrictions may apply.

Pension Scheme – Local Government Pension Scheme

If you are aged between 16 and 65 years old you are eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme. Contributions vary between 5.50% and 7.50% depending on salary for Employees before tax is deducted and the College currently contributes a further 14.5%. All eligible employees will have to elect to be brought into the Scheme, and a contribution, dependent on full time equivalent annual salary, is deducted from salary prior to tax. Additional voluntary contributions can be arranged via AVCs or Added Years. Applicants must make a decision whether to contribute or not - deductions will be made automatically if no election is made. You may only apply for a refund within the first three months of employment

Probationary Period

Appointment will be subject to a probationary period of six months in the first instance.

Staff Development

As part of the Contract of Employment, all appointees will be required to attend staff development events and take part in the College’s Performance Management and Appraisal scheme.

All appointments are made subject to medical clearance. The successful candidate will be required to complete a medical questionnaire, which is sent to the College's Occupational Health Adviser. (Currently Haringey Council).
