2013 Local Scholarship Descriptions

(Deadlines are Wednesday, April 10th unless otherwise noted – Interviews will be Thursday, 4/18)

Crystal Lake Dawnbreaker Rotary/Scott B. Mueller Memorial Scholarship

~ Non-renewable

~ Two $1000 scholarships awarded

~ For students attending a 4-year university.

~Min. 3.0 GPA

~Consideration given to well-roundedness, citizenship & participation in extra-curriculars in high school and the community.

~One page essay required on “why you think volunteering and being active in school and the community is important”.

Paul H. Frederick Memorial (Home State Bank) Scholarship

~Non-renewable

~One scholarship

~Anyone attending a college or university majoring in business

Crystal Lake Service League Scholarships

~Non-renewable

~Number and amount of scholarships varies

~Financial need is top criteria, but volunteerism and community service also considered

~Must be attending a 2- or 4-year college or university

AmVets Post 245 Scholarship

~Non-renewable

~One scholarship

~Must be a descendant (child, grandchild) of a vet

~Must be accepted to an accredited proprietary school, trade school, junior college or apprentice program

Prairie Ridge Booster Club & John Mackey Scholarships

~1- $1000 scholarship (renewable up to 4 years) for a student attending a 4-year school

~1-$500 scholarship (renewable up to 2 yrs.) for student attending a community college or tech/trade school program

William Chandler Peterson American Legion Post 171

~Must have had (or currently have) a family member in the military

~Will award a $1500 scholarship at each high school

~Look for all-around good character and academics, but family military service is required

~Must provide proof of military service (ie – copy of discharge papers, etc.)

The following local organizations will NOT interview with the group on 4/18

**They have separate applications (found in College & Career Center) and some have different deadlines**

Cary Fire Fighters Scholarship

~Several $1000 scholarships

~Any senior living in the Cary Fire Protection District, going on to college, junior college or tech school. If they are pursuing a career as a fire fighter or EMT that is preferred. Similar career choices (ie-nursing) will be considered if no one is pursuing fire fighting or emergency medical services. Financial need is a consideration.

~Application deadline: April 11th

Noon Rotary

~$1000 scholarship awarded

~Student must be enrolling at MCC for fall

~Community service is primary consideration (ie – church group, scouts, sport club, school, etc.)

~GPA and financial need are considered, but secondary

~College major doesn’t matter

~Application deadline: April 11th

Milestone Scholarship

~Number and amount of scholarships varies each year

~This scholarship is intended for students who receive academic support services through the school

~Consideration given to academic success, all-around character, possible financial need and service to school or community

~Application deadline: April 11th

District 155 Teachers’ Association Scholarship

~Non-renewable

~Number and amount of scholarships varies

~Based on character and 2.75 min. GPA. Financial need, demonstrated service to the school and community, potential to contribute to society are all considered. Must be attending a college/university in the fall.

Deadline to apply: March 22nd

Aptar Scholarship Award Program

~New co-op format offers $10,000 in scholarship money and a work study program that involves interning with Aptar for two semesters and during summers.

~Minimum 3.0 GPA required to apply

~Scholastic field of endeavor should be engineering, chemistry, finance/accounting, supply chain, business or operations management, computer science or marketing

~They use their own app and schedule interviews at the company on their own

~Deadline to apply is April 16th

Rotary Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers Joe Helbling Memorial Vocational Scholarship

~ 5 scholarships at $1000 each

~For students NOT attending traditional 4 year schools. (ie - community college, trade/vocational school, cosmetology school, etc.) Thecurriculum must be "certificate based" and cannot be a precursor to a 4-year degree.

~Must be accepted at a school and enrolled for summer or fall

~Letterof recommendation required

~Personal interview will take place sometime after April 19th. You will be contacted.

~Deadline to apply: April 11th

Lions of Crystal Lake Foundation Scholarship

~non-renewable

~one $1000 scholarship

~Available to any student who is legally blind and/or deaf

~Also available to students who plan to work with the mentally, physically, visually or hearing disabled; or careers in nursing, EMT, fire fighting or law enforcement

Cary Lions Club Scholarship

~will award 3 $1000 scholarships (non-renewable) to seniors residing in the 60013 zip code

~Must have a min. 2.0 out of a 4.0 GPA

~Must write a 500+ word essay on community service

~Separate application; must be mailed by April 20th
