Listen to the Moon

By Michael Morpurgo

The book Listen to the Moon is about a young American girl who ends up on an uninhabited island in the Scillies. She is eventually found by a father and son who are out fishing. They take her back to their home, look after her and welcome her into their family. The book then takes you on a journey focusing on her adjustment to her new family as well as looking at how she got there and on her past.

Listen to the Moon is brilliantly written. The way that the author, Morpurgo switched from different character perspectives and went back in time to allow insight into what was happening was accomplished perfectly. He gives the reader just enough information for them to understand what is happening currently in the story but with enough mystery to keep you guessing about the full story.

All the characters are extremely believable and most of them are likeable. The way Morpurgo portrays the characters, giving them unique personalities and strong beliefs makes you feel even more connected to them. The fact that the book is based on actual events that happened during World War I makes it an even more meaningful book because you realise that these atrocities, similar to those experienced by the girl, did happen during the war.

The ending of the book was also extremely good. It explained everything that happened and answered any questions that someone might have about the story. At the back of the book it has background information that gives you details about the ships in the book, the Isles of Scilly and other information about WWI. I found this information very interesting and thought it made the book even more appealing. The story is really gripping and makes you desperate to find out where the girl came from. Listen to the Moon is an amazing book whose pieces come together like a huge jigsaw puzzle. It is beautifully written and is both happy and sad. I loved it.
