Every year since 1992, the Alpbach Summer School on European Integration,which is run as part of the European Forum Alpbach, has offered a compact yet comprehensive course onthe law and policies of the European Community (EC) and the European Union (EU).

This year the Alpbach Summer School on European Integration (ASSEI 2010) welcomes students from Republic of Belorussia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Ukraine and interested in European integration issues students from other countries. Together they enjoy the challenge of an intensive learning experience of two weeks - in the picturesque setting of Kyiv district and in a multi-culturalatmosphere. This Summer School is designed to assist students in acquiring a basic understanding of the workings of the EC-EU, to equip them with the skills required to analyze socio-economic and legal issues of European integration and, more generally, to introduce them to a culture and practice of animated debate of contemporary problems facing European integration.

The Alpbach Summer School on European Integration provides advanced students and young graduates of (economic) law, business administration, international relations, economics and other social and political sciences with an intensive basic course on the Law of European integration. The course and final examination are offered only in English.

Target audience

Students and young graduates of, for instance, (economic) law, business administration, international relations, economics and other social and political sciences under the age of 30 with excellent command of English.

Main Lectors

Alpbach Summer School on European Law and Integration runs under the overall direction of Prof. Dr.Friedl Weiss (Institute of European, International and Comparative Law, University of Vienna), who also teaches classes together with Prof. Petra Bard (Department of Legal Studies, Centre for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine, Central European Institute) andProf. Jürgen Busch (Department of Legal and Constitutional History, Law Faculty, University of Vienna).

Compulsory Reading before the course starts:

Compulsory preparation of the following treaties:

1) THE TREATY ON EUROPEAN UNION AND THE TREATY ESTABLISHING THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY (consolidated text);
2) Consolidated versions of the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (after Lisbon).

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for students and young graduates of, for instance, (economic) law, business administration, international relations, economics and other social and political sciences under the age of 30 year from the following countries: Republic of Belorussia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Ukraine. The scholarship does not cover medical insurance and visa costs. Travel costs could be covered by scholarship partly in exceptional cases.

Besides students and young graduates from above-mentioned countries ASSEI 2010 welcomes interested students and young graduates from other countries.

Fees and costsfor participants for self-paying applicants:

- tuition fee is EUR 500 for the full course which is refundable in the case of cancellation,

- accommodation cost is EUR 35 per day,

- meal expenses are approximately EUR 7 per day,

- medical insurance (obligatory to get for all non-Ukrainian selected participants before the start of school with limit not less than EUR 20000 in their own countries). Its duration must cover the whole school dates.

- visa costs. However we expect that the most of participants will be the citizens of non-visa regime countries,

- guarantee deposit.

Guarantee deposit for all applicants

Should you be admitted to the programme, we will ask for a guarantee deposit of EUR 100 (for Ukrainian participants – EUR 50 in Ukrainian currency according to the rate of the National bank of Ukraine at the day of payment) in order to confirm your participation. This deposit is not refundable in the case of cancellation. It’ll be refunded at the last day of school except the case of participant’s serious break of school disciplinary rules.

Self-paying students have to pay guarantee deposit on the same basis separately from the tuition fee. It’ll be refunded to them on the same basis.

Payments information

Deadline for payments of the tuition fee, accommodation cost (for self-paying students) and guarantee deposit (for all students) is 15th June 2010.

Bank account for payments the tuition fee, accommodation cost and /or deposit will be informed to selected participants personally.

Selection Procedure

The Selection Committee consists of outstanding Ukrainian politicians, professors and specialists in European integration issues. Scholarship-receivers will be informed by email no later 10 June 2010.
