LHS Chemistry Safety Rules and Contract

The chemistry laboratory is a place to experiment and learn. You will be working with equipment and materials that can harm if they are improperly handled. You must assume responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others working near you in the laboratory. Accidents most often happen due to carelessness and not following safety rules. You can help prevent accidents by closely following the instructions given by your teacher.

Laboratory Safety Rules

1. Be prepared to work in the laboratory by reading the

experiment and completing pre-lab assignments.

2. Perform the experiment as directed. Do NOT do

anything that is not part of an approved experiment.

3. Never work without adult supervision.

4. Dress appropriately for lab:

a. wear goggles and apron

b. wear shoes that cover the entire foot

c. tie back long hair

d. remove dangling jewelry

e. no loose flowing/floppy sleeves

5. Learn the location and operation of emergency

equipment: eye wash, shower, fire extinguisher

6. Act in a responsible manner at all times – no

horseplay or fooling around.

7. Do not eat or drink in the lab.

8. Never taste a chemical. Check odors by wafting.

9. Turn off burner when not in use. NEVER leave

it unattended.

10. Keep combustibles away from open flames.

11. Read chemical labels carefully.

12. Follow teacher directions for chemical disposal.

13. Never return unused chemicals to reagent bottle.

14. Notify teacher of any spills so they can be cleaned

up properly.

15. Do not pick up broken glass with hands.

16. Notify teacher of any accidents immediately.

17. Clean up your work area. Put all equipment away

and wash your hands thoroughly.

First Aid in the Laboratory

Event / Response: Always notify teacher immediately
Burn / Flush with cool water
Cut / Wash with clean water. Apply pressure if bleeding.
Fainting / Don’t crowd! Allow fresh air have recline.
Fire / Remove oxygen source by covering container. If a person, use fire blanket.
Foreign matter in eye / Use eyewash to flush eye with lots of water. Keep eye open.
Spills on skin / Flush with plenty of water. Use shower if necessary for large spill.
Acid spills / If small, dilute with water and wipe up. If large spill, neutralize with baking soda (NaHCO3)
Base spills / If small, dilute with water and wipe up. If large neutralize with boric acid (H2BO3)
