  1. HSPLS HI Technology Academy

We are continuing to work with Microsoft on the deployment, training, marketing and PR plans for the HI Technology Academy program within HSPLS. A key part of the PR/Launch plan is our effort to include Craig Mundie, Microsoft Chief Research and Strategy Officer, in the formal announcement of the program. Mr. Mundie plans to be in Hawaii in November to participate in the APEC Conference, and we are still working on this, but preliminary indications are positive.

  1. Palama Supermarkets makes $5,000 Donation to HSPLS

Palama Supermarkets, through a partnership with the Korean Library Foundation (KLF), donated $5,000 to HSPLS for the purchase of Korean language materials. In addition, Palama Supermarkets saves HSPLS more than $10,000 annually in shipping fees by providing free transport of Korean language materials from Korea to Honolulu. McCully-Moiliili Public Library hosts this premier collection of current and popular Korean language materials. In addition to books, KLF donates English-subtitled DVDs of popular Korean TV dramas to benefit Hawaii's residents and heighten awareness of Korean culture, history, and language. During our 14-year collaboration with KLF, they have donated more than 19,000 materials which have circulated 60,000 times.

  1. "Captain Cooked" Author Donates 12 Copies of Book to State Library System

S. P. Grogan, author of “Captain Cooked,” an Honorable Mention winner of the Hawaii Book Publishers Association's 2011Ka Palapala Po`okela Awards for Excellence in the “Aloha from Across the Sea” category, presented a donation of 12 autographed copies of his book to the Hawaii State Public Library System in a ceremony at the Hawaii State Library on August 10. “Captain Cooked” is a Quest Mystery involving GPS; a real shark tooth war club geo-cached (hidden) somewhere on the Big Island and when discovered can be redeemed for a $5,000 cash prize. Believe it or not, the clues to the mystery can be found in the book!
