Linguistics 19 Syllabus

PURPOSE: To develop basic vocabulary and pronunciation skills.

METHOD OF STUDY:

Familiarize yourself with the operation of the course by reading the User's Guide, pages 13-38.

For each lesson, go through both the recognition/pronunciation steps and the learning to speak steps.

Recognition/Pronunciation:

1. Begin with Skill B exercise 1. Proceed through the entire lesson once, repeating back aloudthe foreign word, phrase or sentence before matching it to the correct picture.

2. Repeat Skill B exercise 1 until you are able to match each phrase to a picture with perfect accuracy. Don't forget to repeat after the speaker.

Learning to Speak:

3.Go to Skill D preview exercise where you will see the picture without sound. Turn off the text by clicking the text icon to the right of the pictures. Look at each picture and produce the word, phrase or sentence that goes with that picture as you learned it Skill B. Check your pronunciation by pressing the speaker icon on that picture.

4. Repeat Skill D preview exercise until you can produce the words that go with each picture with perfect accuracy. When you are satisfied that you have mastered each phrase, go to the next lesson.

EXAMINATION:

During the examination, you will be shown picture sheets with pictures taken from anywhere in the lessons you are responsible for knowing. The Supervisor will choose pictures at random from the sheets, and you will be asked to produce the foreign words that go with that picture. You will also have a rough English translation of the foreign phrase as a prompt. Scoring: You will be given a score of from 1 (poorest) to 5 (best) in each of 4 areas: recall time before speaking, pronunciation/fluidity, grammar, vocabulary. Your overall score will be a weighted average of those scores with the highest weight given to recall time, second highest to pronunciation/fluidity, third highest to grammar and fourth highest to vocabulary. Your grade will be based on this overall score.
