Public Open Space

This lecture and studio course will examine public open space and its relationship to public life and culture in cities and towns including streets, parks, and squares. The course will examine theories and methods of public open space design and management. A typology of spaces is used to examine public life today and how design can respond to this life and culture. Special emphasis will be placed designing for user needs and on new and emerging forms of public open space including community open spaces, nearby nature, learning landscapes and linear parks. Emphasis will also be placed on the relationship of transportation including walking and biking to urban open space design and mixed-use development.

FORMAT

The course will consist of selected readings, discussion, lectures and studio projects on public open space. The lecture format will be informal and discussion will be encouraged.

SCHEDULE

The LDA 180L lecture (2 units) will meet Monday and Wednesdays from 9 AM to 10 AM in 1 Wellman. The LDA 181L studio (3 units) will meet from 10 to 1 PM in TB 106.

ENROLLMENT

The lecture portion is open is all majors depending on space available. The studio portion is open to landscape architecture majors with priority for seniors.

PROJECTS & GRADING

For the lecture portion of the course, a final case study paper is required on a public open space of your choice. Grading for the lecture will be based on the final paper (80%) and class participation (20%). For the studio, there will be two projects focused on the analysis and design of open space in mixed-use development. Grading for the studio will be based on the two projects (40% each) and class participation (20%).
