9.2DESCRIPTION OF STUDIES
9.2.1Degree Programme in Dance Teacher Education
Bachelor of Cultural Studies 240 ECTS cr (160 Finnish cr)
Dance Teacher
During the education students function as dancers, choreographers, teachers and organizers of dance competitions, acquiring diversified expertise for work in the dance field. Festival arrangements are a special know-how area in the degree programme. Practical teaching exercises, subject-specific didactic studies and pedagogical studies create a foundation for the professional identity of a teacher. During the education students also familiarize themselves with other dance techniques besides their chosen dance idiom (other dance idioms in the degree programme, modern dance, flamenco, jazz dance etc.). The degree programme includes 52,5 ECTS credits (35 Finnish credits) of pedagogical studies.
The students develop expertise for planning, teaching, evaluation and training tasks in the dance field. Graduates find employment in the fields of all-round art education, guidance of recreational dance activity, basic art instruction, professional art education and dance training.
Options in the degree programme of dance teacher are classical ballet, folk dance and competitive ballroom dance and social dance.
In the option of classical ballet practical exercises and subject-specific didactic studies qualify the students for teaching on levels I and II of the Finnish classical ballet teaching system. The emphasis is on transfer of tradition and application of sports sciences to teaching. After graduation students are for example able to rehearse and prepare choreographies for dancers of different ages according to the rules of a particular stylistic period. Students become qualified to teach classical ballet and children’s dance.
In the option of folk dance the education focuses on Finnish and Finno-Ugric folk dances. In addition, students also study dance history, folk music, customs and costume culture. The education qualifies students for teaching traditional folk dance and creating and developing modern folk dance.
In the option of competitive ballroom dance and social dance the objective is for students to become proficient in the basic teaching and competitive training of ballroom dance up to level D-C of the Finnish amateur system and acquire a comprehensive overall view of living social dance culture. With regard to style-specific skills the required proficiency may vary from teaching social dances to amateurs to goal-oriented ballroom dance training. In social dance instruction students learn, besides traditional pairs dances, for example swing or American dances as well as Latin and disco dances and familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of rhythmics and theory of music. Students develop a solid technical foundation by completing a syllabus equivalent to the international associate degree in both ballroom and Latin dances. In addition students acquire basic qualifications for jury work.
Oulu Polytechnic is an influential player on a national scale as a developer of dance culture, since it is the only educational institution in Finland where art dance, competitive ballroom dance, folk dance and social dance interact on a daily basis. Diversity and versatility are our assets. Due to the daily interaction between the degree programmes dance teachers graduating from Oulu Polytechnic have wide-ranging expertise and are aware of the importance of other dance idioms.
