Purpose and overall objective of role:

To lead on and support learning for students with learning disabilities taking part in the JumpstART! project.

JumpstART!:

JumpstART! is a creative modular course for adults with learning disabilities aged 16+ to develop creative and life skills. The project uses professional artists to lead the creative content and uses a person-centred planning approach as a framework for individuals’ learning.

The project will take place in Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. Candidates may apply for the role in one or more locations.

The project consists of modules of one day per week for 15 weeks with a recruitment phase of taster sessions and explore days before each module. Each module has a different artform focus and includes a showcase opportunity.

The outcomes for the project are:

  1. People with learning disabilities will demonstrate an increase in confidence and creative, life and employability skills
  1. People with learning disabilities will lead healthier and more active lives
  1. People with learning disabilities will be less socially isolated and more able to progress on to further opportunities.

Main responsibilities:

-Together with the Project Development Officer and lead artists, design a structured programme for each module that reflects the chosen subject and learning objectives using Schemes of Work and Lesson Plans and other relevant teaching materials.

-Teach specific elements of the course as decided together with the Project Development Officer.

-Together with the Project Development Officer, ensure person centered plans are created for each individual learner and used to monitor progress

-Develop learners’ confidence and self-esteem. Ensure that each learner’s contribution is recognised and valued and create a climate conducive to the learning needs of adults.

-Contribute to project development through personal development, best practice andattendance at meetings and training events.

-Complete and maintain a Course File,giving details of the work covered with the learners during the course, e.g. Scheme ofWork, Lesson Plan, Individual Learning Plan, Tutor Course Evaluation. Be responsible for ensuring learners keep their personal portfolios up to date

-To ensure the students are able to benefit fully from the course, when appropriate:

  • Keep the learner focussed on the task they are working on
  • Prompt/guide the learner
  • Interpret instructions and information the artist presents to the group in a way that is accessible to the learner
  • Identify any support needs that become evident through working with the learner

-Support the lead artist/tutor in the delivery of the module sessions

-Support the Project Development Officer in co-ordinating sessions where appropriate

-Liaise with Project Development Officer and artists to ensure appropriate equipment/materials are available for sessions

-Support the delivery of evaluation and monitoring procedures as agreed including regular reflection sessions after each workshop and at the end of each module.

-Together with the artist, plan and deliver Taster sessions to recruit students for the modules.

-Carry out any administrative tasks needed to support the project as agreed with Project Development Officer

-Implement Suffolk Artlink’s Equality and Diversity, Safeguarding and other relevant policies in working with learners. Together with the Project Development Officer, complete a health and safety risk assessment for all activities being undertaken in the classroom, so that staff and learners are offered the maximum protection from accident and injury

-Report any issues to the Project Development Officer

-Attend Suffolk Artlink meetings as required

-Act as advocate for Suffolk Artlink and the JumpstART! project during project sessions and public events

-Attend appropriate training sessions

-Provide regular feedback on progress of module to Project Development Officer

-Any other task agreed to be within the scope of the role as it develops

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential experience, knowledge and skills

Experience of working with people with learning disabilities

Experience of teaching/leading workshops

Experience of working in creative arts settings

Excellent organisational and time management skills

Excellent communication skills

Creative approach to learning

Interest in creative arts and the value of participating in arts activities

An understanding of equal opportunities issues

An ability to work as part of a team

Desirable experience, knowledge and skills

Experience of person centred planning

Experience of evaluation and monitoring procedures

Full driving licence and own transport

Knowledge of local appropriate services and networks

Some Conditions

Pay: £14.62 per hour

Hours/Contract:Casual employee. 10 hours per week for each week of the 15-week moduleplus 5 Tasters at 3 hours per taster

TOTAL = 165 hours per Term

Some additional hours may be agreed to attend training and development

The role will be renewed for each module. It is expected the

same person will be employed over the whole project (7 terms). Confirmation/notice will be given 1 month before term commences.

Report to:Project Development Officers

DBS check:The postholder will be working with vulnerable adults and will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.

Holidays:Holiday entitlement per module will be paid in addition to time worked within the contract.

Transport:A mileage cost allowance of 40p per mile or the cost of travel by public transport is payable for any travel beyond that to and from the designated venue.

and start date:A Learning Support Tutor is required to support the project in each of the following locations:

  • Lowestoft

The first module is scheduled to start in September 2015 with 5 tasters taking place in June/July 2015. Modules take place on Thursdays9.30am – 4.30pm

  • Bury St Edmunds
  • The first module is scheduled to start in September 2015 with 5 tasters taking place in June/July 2015. Modules take place on Tuesdays9.30am – 4.30pm
  • Ipswich

The first module is scheduled to start in January 2016 with 10 tasters taking place over September/October/November/December 2015. Modules take place on Wednesdays9.30am-4.30pm (NOT CONFIRMED)

Candidates are able to apply for the role in one or more locations.

Learning Support Tutors will be required to be present at every module and taster session in addition to carrying out some administrative/planning/support tasks outside the sessions – either at home or in the Suffolk Artlink office in Halesworth as agreed.
