Job Purpose:

To promote cycling as a form of active and sustainable travel, to school age children, parents and staff at selected primary and secondary schools in line with Leicester City Council’s Cycle City Action Plan. To support ‘school champions’ in schools, to harness local authority resources available for cycling and active travel and to make links between schools and the wider community.

Place in organisational structure:

The postholder will be one of a national team of officers and will report to the Delivery Co-ordinator, Midlands and East. There will be close liaison with local authority staff and their delivery partners and Sustrans regional and central staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. To promote cycling as a form of active and sustainable travel through the delivery of schoolbased activities, events and training, making use of all available resources so as to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the programme.
  2. To measure baseline travel behaviour and carry out follow up surveys at participating schools and complete other monitoring tasks required of the post.
  3. To provide support for all agencies involved in the delivery of the Access Fund (including British Cycling & Living Streets), School Run Parking Fund and Leicester North West Major Transport Scheme package, such as in the consultation, planning and delivery of infrastructure improvements.
  4. To provide advice, information and co-ordinate training activities for ‘school champions’ – who include pupils, staff, parents, governors andvolunteers.
  5. To develop links between schools and other existing localcommunity support for active and sustainable travel.
  6. To support activities in FE/HE, neighbourhood or workplace settings, the Ride Leicester programme and Ride Leicester Festival when required.
  7. To share good practice with other schools in the area through presentations, workshops and press articles.
  8. To compile progress reports and provide other evidence for project stakeholders as required.
  9. To manage the effective use of locally held budgets for purchasing resources, support materials and other services.
  10. To use a range of media and techniques, including social media sites and networking to raise awareness of Active Travel.
  11. To attend all stakeholder meetings, including the Cycle City stakeholder meetings.
  12. To recruit and support volunteers to assist with the running of the project and to provide legacy for the project.
  13. To support Sustrans and partners to develop further funding opportunities
  14. To carry out other duties as required.

  • To attend essential Sustrans training as required by the Charity.

Working Conditions:

The postholder will be one of a team of Project Officers based across the country and will work at the nominated office base, although there may be opportunities to work from home at times. Occasional overnight stays away from home, weekend and late working may be required.

The postholder will be prepared to walk, cycle and/or use public transport for the majority of daily work journeys.

Employment will be conditional on clearance by an EnhancedDBS Disclosure check.
