Job Title: Optometrist Research Fellow

Salary: £28,695 - £37,394 per annum (pro rata), dependent upon skills and experience.

Job Family and Level: R&T 4

Contract Status: Fixed term

Hours of Work: 7.25 hours per week for 12 months, or 14.5 hours per week for 6 months.

Location: University Park Campus

Reporting to: Dr Jonathan Denniss & Dr Andrew Astle

Purpose of the New Role:

This post forms part of a project entitled “Efficient Search for the Optimum Retinal Location in Central Vision Loss”, funded by The College of Optometrists. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of new techniques for measuring central vision loss via gaze-contingent microperimetry.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / To recruit volunteer participants with central vision loss from appropriate sources, perform clinical screening and characterisation of participants for study entry, and test participants on psychophysical tests including microperimetry and custom-designed tests measuring aspects of central vision. / 70%
2. / To contribute to analysis and interpretation of resultant data and to the production of arising publications. / 15%
3. / Administrative tasks related to (1), including liaising with local hospital eye departments and charities as necessary. / 15%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / ·  Degree in optometry
·  PhD or equivalent in relevant subject area or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience in research area / ·  Higher degree or higher clinical qualification in optometry
Skills/Training / ·  Excellent communication and organisational skills / ·  Training or experience in clinical research
Experience / ·  Clinical experience with elderly patients
·  Experience of conducting visual field tests / ·  Experience working with patients with central vision loss
·  Experience using microperimetry and/or laboratory psychophysical tests
·  Experience of liaising directly with hospital eye departments and/or charities
Statutory/Legal / ·  Eligibility to work in the UK
·  Registration as an optometrist with the General Optical Council

Decision Making

i)  taken independently by the role holder

Plan own work schedule and day-to-day work according to agreed objectives.

ii)  taken in collaboration with others

Time-scales and nature of recruitment, testing, data analysis, and administration of project

iii)  referred to the appropriate line manager (Dr Jonathan Denniss & Dr Andrew Astle) by the role holder

Wider research strategy of project and research group
