Job Purpose
  • Play a major role in the support of the SQL Server Database estate.
  • Carry out knowledge/skills transfer to other members of the team. This team is primarilyan Oracle Database/Application Server and Jboss centred team.
  • Configure, support and maintain the SQL Server Database estate that underpins many critical Applications.
  • Develop and maintain documentation in line with SLC standards.
  • Provide support and assistance to other ICT internal and external partners both for BAU and Projects.
  • Contribute to, and take responsibility for, the security and safety of all SQL Server Databases in the SLC estate.
  • Contribute to the development and support of monitoring and alerting systems to generate appropriate alerts and document remedial action to prevent unscheduled downtime of Sql Server systems.
Key Accountabilities
  • Reporting to the Database and Mid-Tier Team Manager you will be expected to take the lead in all aspects of supporting of the estate.
  • Work closely with Wintel Analysts in the Server and Storage Team.
  • Responsible for the security and integrity of the SQL Server estate.
  • Respond to incidents and problems in a timeous manner through to resolution.
  • Escalate Incidents/Problems to the Team Manager and liaise with other Support Teams as required.
  • Work with the Senior Technical Analysts to share information and seek appropriate advice.
  • Work closely with all team members to develop their SQL Server skills.
  • Work collaboratively with all other ICT departments and customers.
  • Potentially provide out of hours on-call support.
Essential Skills / Experience / Qualifications
  • Proven expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (up to SQL Server 2014).
  • Experience in designing SQL Server solutions.
  • Experience in setting up SQL Server Security on databases.
  • Proficient in SQL Server Database Administration.
  • Significant experience in the Installation and Configuration of SQL server in stand-alone, clustered and mirrored environments. These should include Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services and Always On.
  • Be able to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of SQL Server database migration from older versions.
  • Practical experience troubleshooting SQL Server outages and performance issues.
  • Experience in Backup and Restore of databases.
  • Sound knowledge of creation, tuning and optimisation of SQL queries and maintenance jobs to improve database performance using Sql Server tools such as Profiler and Tuning Advisor.
  • Good knowledge of T-SQL
  • Proven experience of consolidation of SQL Server instances.
  • Good knowledge of using stores procedures.
  • Solid understanding of SAN Storage (EMC), Virtualisation (VMware) and Windows Server Operating Systems.
Desirable Skills / Experience
Although this is a SQL Server role the team primarily support an extensive Oracle Database and Application Server estate which underpins all of SLC’s internet facing systems. Therefore the following would be desirable but not essential as cross training opportunities will occur in the future.
  • Networker SQL Server backup/restores
  • Windows Powershell
  • Knowledge of Oracle RDBMS from 10g onwards.
  • Knowledge of Oracle Application Server 10g and Fusion Middleware 12.2
  • Knowledge of JBoss 6.3.
  • Experience of Linux/Unix environments..
