Job Description – Teaching Assistant Level 1

PURPOSE:

Support the class teacher in the teaching and welfare of children both in class and school to ensure they attain the targets set under their individual educational programmes through intervention programmes.

RESPONSIBLITIES:

  1. Ensure the maintenance of a clean, orderly and safe working environment making sure that equipment/recourses/materials are set out on time and as per instructions received and used safely to enable pupils meet their learning targets.
  1. Assist teacher with learning activities ensuring health and safety and good behaviour of pupils. Support the pupils in accessing learning activities as directed by the teacher to enable pupil’ progress towards their targets. Be aware of and support differences to ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  1. Provide clerical/admin support (e.g. typing, photocopying, display, collection and recording of money e.t.c.) and undertake basic recording keeping in respect of pupil learning, behaviour management, child protection etc. as directed in order to support the teacher deliver the specific learning programmes set for each child.
  1. Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure pupils’ wellbeing.
  1. Contribute to the overall work/aims of the school and appreciate and support the role of colleagues and other professionals to enable the school fulfil its development plans etc.
  1. Undertake training and other learning activities and attend relevant meetings (within contracted hours) as required to ensure own continuing professional development.
  1. Be able to use a range of strategies to deal with classroom behaviour and understand individual behavioural needs to ensure pupils’ learning needs are met.
  1. Promote good behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line established policy.
  1. Demonstrate high expectations of pupils’ learning and behaviour assisting the promotion/reinforcement of pupils self esteem.

Other Duties:

Any duties which reasonably fall within the purpose of the post, these may include:

  • Midday play leader activities promoting pupils’ social and emotional development.
  • Cover supervision duties.
  • Administration linked to pupil the achievement and welfare of pupils.
  • Supervise pupils off site on school trips and other external visits.

These duties may be varied to meet the changing demands of the school at the reasonable discretion of the Head Teacher and following consultation with you.
