JOB DESCRIPTION – CLINICAL SUPERVISOR

Post:Clinical Supervisor

Hours:12 hours per week

Responsible to:Centre Manager, supported by the Chair of Trustees

Role:The post holder will work in tandem with the other Clinical Supervisor of Relate Avon. The post holder will work within Relate’s policies and best practice standards to deliver the clinical supervision and support needed for counsellors to work safely, to meet the clients’ needs and meet the requirements of the Relate Centre by providing proactive support developing the Centre’s services.

Location:The post holder’s main location of work will be the Centre in Bristol but will from time to time involve work in other locations around the Centre’s area of activity. In addition the post holder may be expected to attend meetings at Relate central office or other Relate centres as necessary.

Salary:£27-29,000 (pro rata)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To share direct supervision with the other Clinical Supervisor in the Centre of the work of the counselling team
  • To support the Centre Manager in ensuring best practice, safe and accessible services are delivered
  • To offer advice and consultation on practice issues relating to safeguarding, confidentiality & disclosure
  • To hold clinical responsibility for services jointly with the other Clinical Supervisor
  • To support the management team in the development of new services and the monitoring and evaluation of all services.
  • Participate in activities and meetings appropriate to the role.
  • Report to the Centre Trustees on practice issues by preparing and presenting a written report for the Executive Committee meetings.

1. KEY TASKS

1.1 Provide individual and group supervision as required by Relate’s standards to the counselling team – both trainee and trained practitioners.

1.2 To be available to counsellors by telephone outside normal office hours to a reasonable degree to deal with urgent issues that arise, especially those involving vulnerable clients or critical situations.

1.3 To be available to other members of Centre staff to discuss and advise on issues that arise in relation to clients and practice issues as appropriate.

1.4 Maintain accountability for clinical decisions, particularly in relation to service contracts, boundaries, breaches of confidentiality and holding clients at risk.

1.5 Achieve and maintain registration on the Relate Supervisor register.

1.6 Liaise with appropriate staff and external agencies to co-ordinate the development and delivery of services.

1.7 Support the Centre Manager in ensuring policies and procedures are up to date and adhered to.

1.8 Advise the Centre Manager and Trustees on issues that have practice implications with appropriate information and recommendations.

1.9 To maintain a practice caseload within the Centre and receive appropriate supervision and training (hours in addition to the supervisory responsibility).

2. PERSONNEL

2.1 Participate in practitioner appraisals with the Centre Manager.

2.2 Provide advice on disciplinary procedures involving practice issues.

2.3 Ensure counsellors are registered appropriately with Relate and keep records of training and CPD attended by counsellors.

2.4 Assist the Centre Manager in ensuring the counselling team is recruited and trained to meet client needs, and assist in coordinating the deployment of practitioners.

2.5 Oversee the allocation of clients to counsellors-in-training

2.6 Attend supervision and line management.

2.7 Assess your ongoing training needs and attend appropriate courses.

3. HEALTH & SAFETY, CHILD PROTECTION AND PROTECTION OF VULNERABLE ADULTS

3.1 Ensure that you are aware of and adhere to Relate Health & Safety Policies and are aware of procedures regarding staff and client safety.

3.2 Ensure that all Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult concerns are reported in accordance with Relate procedures.

4. ADMINISTRATION

4.1 Maintain practitioner and supervision records in line with policy.

4.2 Ensure that client files and records are kept in a proper manner.

4.3 Ensure that the Operational Policies are adhered to, including Child Protection and Confidentiality Policies. Ensure that you work in accordance with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Code of Ethics and Practice for Counsellors, remaining mindful of COSRT and AFT and also Safeguarding Children’s Board if supervising these services.

5. OTHER

5.1 Promote equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice.

5.3 Work within the framework of the Relate Supervision service and adhere to Relate supervision standards, liaising and consulting with practice consultants as necessary.

5.4 Undertake such other duties as required by the Centre Manager appropriate to the post.

5.5 Undertake training or other activities required to meet the objectives of the post.

PERSON SPECIFICATION – CLINICAL SUPERVISOR

ESSENTIAL:

Qualifications & Experience

A qualified practitioner (eg Relate qualification or equivalent) with at least 2 years relevant post qualification experience of couple counselling.

Sound work experience with couples

Recognised Supervision Qualification (Psychodynamic and/or Systemic) equivalent to a Relate supervision training or willingness and suitability to attend and complete the Relate Certificate in Clinical Supervision

Meets the criteria for registration on the Relate Supervisor Register (or any shortfall to be met within 12 months of appointment)

Good knowledge of ethical, legal and professional issues in counselling

Experience of working with a range of complex practice issues

Skills and Attributes

Is in agreement with the aims of Relate and committed to anti-discriminatory practice

Ability to operate within Relate policies, procedures and guidelines.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a management team.

Ability to work one to one and lead groups; support and develop colleagues and where necessary discipline regarding practice matters.

Ability to recognise the boundaries of one’s own competence and when to seek appropriate help or supervision.

Effective communication skills both verbal and written

DESIRABLE:

Training skills and presentation skills

BACP (or equivalent) accreditation or ability to work towards accreditation

Able to supervise more than one counselling specialism

Understanding of a range of theories and methodologies

Understanding or experience of working in the voluntary/charitable sector
