STEP / ACTION / HELPFUL TIPS / DONE1 / Check the McKinney website to see if the proposed experience falls within one of the current law school approved externship baskets. Each externship has a faculty advisor assigned to oversee the experience. /
2 / If the proposed experience does not fit into any of the law school externship baskets, you may have to earn the externship credit through the Supervised Externship Placement (SEP). SEP requires students to secure their own full-time faculty advisor to supervise the experience. SEP requires completion of additional forms which can be found on the school’s website. /
3 / Talk to your employer about the possibility of receiving law school credit in addition to compensation. / Rule)
4 / If the employer agrees to allow credit in addition to compensation, you will need to work with your employer to prepare a memo for review and approval.
5 / The memo should be submitted to the faculty advisor of the proposed externship and the Director of Experiential Learning for approval. The memo must be submitted and reviewed no later than (1) week prior to the start of the semester in which credit is being sought. /
6 / The Faculty Advisor and the Director of Experiential Learning will review the memo and notify you of their decision. / Cynthia Baker

7 / If the experience is approved, you will be registered for thePaid externship for the requested number of credit hours. Most externships are available for (2) or (3) credit hours. Students are required to work at the placement office 50 hours for each credit earned.
8 / Once registered for the course, the Faculty Advisor will follow-up with you about the additional course requirements and meeting with them throughout the upcoming semester.
