Introduction: The Civil War is called by several different names depending on point of view. It was called “The Great Rebellion”, “Just Cause”, and the “War that Divided the Nation”. It was a conflict between brothers, father and sons; North vs. South, rights vs. wrong, and beliefs. Historians believed this war is significant in defining our “American Character”. It made our country stronger and better rather than weaker and worse off. Some of the main causes are still an issue today. The enduring questions are

¨  Did this war help shape what the United States character is today?

¨  What was the impact this war had on our Constitution?

¨  Is there any justification for war?

¨  Can it happen again in history and under what circumstances?

Springfield, Illinois
June 16, 1858

In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed.

"A house divided against itself cannot stand."

I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.

I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided.

It will become all one thing or all the other.

Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new -- North as well as South.

“both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came” ~Lincoln~ March 4, 1865

It is well that war is so terrible. We should grow too fond of it. Robert E. Lee

Quotes:With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword...~Robert E. Lee

"No terms, except unconditional and immediate surrender, can be accepted. I propose to move immediately on your works. I am very respectfully, your obedient servant, "~Ulysses S. Grant~

WORDS AND MUSIC: GEORGE FREDRICK ROOT

1. Yes we’ll rally ‘round the flag, boys, rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom,
We will rally from the hillside, we’ll gather from the plain,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.

Chorus:
The Union forever, Hurrah, boys, Hurrah!
Down with the traitor up with the star;
While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.

2. We are springing to the call of our brothers gone before,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom,
And we’ll fill the vacant ranks with a million Free men more,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.

Chorus

3. We will welcome to our numbers the loyal, true and brave,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom,
And although he may be poor he shall never be a slave,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.

Chorus

4. So we’re springing to the call from the East and from the West,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom,
And we’ll hurl the rebel crew from the land we love the best,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.

We are a band of brothers
And native to the soil,
Fighting for the property
We gained by honest toil;
And when our rights were threatened,
The cry rose near and far--
"Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star!"

CHORUS:
Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.

As long as the Union
Was faithful to her trust,
Like friends and like brothers
Both kind were we and just;
But now, when Northern treachery
Attempts our rights to mar,
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

First gallant South Carolina
Nobly made the stand,
Then came Alabama,
Who took her by the hand.
Next quickly Mississippi,
Georgia and Florida
All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

Ye men of valor, gather round
The banner of the right;
Texas and fair Louisiana
Join us in the fight.
Davis, our loved president,
And Stephens statesmen are;
Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

And here's to old Virginia--
The Old Dominion State--
Who with the young Confederacy
At length has linked her fate;
Impelled by her example,
Now other states prepare
To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

Then cheer, boys, cheer;
Raise the joyous shout,
For Arkansas and North Carolina
Now have both gone out;
And let another rousing cheer
For Tennessee be given,
The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag
Has grown to be eleven.
CHORUS

Then here's to our Confederacy,
Strong are we and brave;
Like patriots of old we'll fight
Our heritage to save.
And rather than submit to shame,
To die we would prefer;
So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

© Abraham Lincoln Online / The Gettysburg Address
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
November 19, 1863
On June 1, 1865, Senator Charles Sumner commented on what is now considered the most famous speech by President Abraham Lincoln. In his eulogy on the slain president, he called it a "monumental act." He said Lincoln was mistaken that "the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here." Rather, the Bostonian remarked, "The world noted at once what he said, and will never cease to remember it. The battle itself was less important than the speech."

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
