1. Progress report summary – period April/December 2010

1 / ●Contacting and contracting 45 rollout educational institutions in 11 countries; model contract / ●In progress;
●so far no Memorandum of Agreements have been signed. The schools are going to be asked to sign a paper after using the project and playing the game.
●51 Educational institutions have been registered at the community platform, with more than 64 teachers involved. There are 1978 players registered as students.

1.4 Main activities until the end of the action – January 2011 to August 2011

Focus of the last 8 months period will be mainly on:

1) the roll-out, by which the educational institutions have to be contracted, in order to give evidence of the target of 50 registered schools and of at least 6000 registered students.

2) the evaluation of results via the questionnaires filled by registered game players;

3) the organisation of EU-level(online) and local game competitions

4) the implementation of the communication strategy which comprises the organisation of 6 local events and a final conference. Consortium members have been discussing the organisation of the final event. We are looking for a suitable conference to hook up, in order to have a more interesting conference.

5) the continuation of Enercities beyond the project life time: this topic has been analysed during the last meeting in Lancaster (UK) and there’s a plan to submit a Leonardo da Vinci Transfer of Innovation project to implement Enercities in other EU countries.

6) periodical update of the links contained in the toolbox and development of a teacher friendly version for after the end of the project.

2.Consortium management in the period (1-2 pages)

2.1Communication

After the interim report partners were supposed to have a meeting in Granada. Due to the ash cloud only the Greek succeeded in getting there. There was a Bilateral meeting Greece – Spain, during which the first European competition took place. In order to make some necessary arrangements we had a Skype meeting Monday the 19th of April. There we agreed on coming to Nijmegen on the 11th of May. .

We tried to use OfficeWorkspace, because of the problems incurred with SurfGroepen and foreign e-mail. In Nijmegen we agreed on using our forum (EnerCities.EU) for communication. Nevertheless files are still being shared on SurfGroepen and communication is done by E-mail mainly.

2.2Meetings

There has been several Dutch meetings, this to prepare the Partner meeting in Granada, Nijmegen and later Lancaster and to support the roll out and the dissemination. There were two consortium meetings, the first in Nijmegen – where we discussed the roll-out – the second in Lancaster-Morecambe where we discussed the competitions and the sustaining of the project.

Nijmegen 11 May:

There was explanation on how to fill in the forms for declaration, and what costs are eligible. Stephanie was there to answer questions partners had in this matter.

We discussed the issue of ownership of EnerCities (the game) and the other project parts.

Investigated the possibility of a final conference in the partner countries. Discussed the way we should reach the targets and how to meet the result indicators. There were suggestions on the consortium communication, but in the end it still works via SurfGroepen. The dates for the next meetings were agreed and there were suggestions for the local events and European competitions.

Lancaster and Morecambe 8-9 November:

Here we discussed the feedback on the interim report we got from Brussels. Partners are going to look into their budgets (Hourly as well as Euro’s) The partners with subcontractors are going to look, if there is under spending or not.

Paladin will look into the game to deal with the “game over” suggestion and the remarks from “Alex”, the character in the game. They are going to solve the spam problem in the forum too.

All partners are looking into their toolboxes to update them, so the project is ready for its last stage.

The European competitions are to be held in January, March and April. And the remaining events will be in March (SI, NL), April (GR) and May (DE)

On the 9th of November consortium had a tour around the University of Lancaster-Morecambe and there was an event going on, in which the roll out was to be seen in full action. After the visit the statistics of the roll out were discussed, and partners benefitted from the experiences of each other.

This couldn’t really be a roll out reflection, because the roll out is still in progress.

2.3 Dissemination

EnerCities was at the CVI (Consortium voor Innovatie) conference in Holland (The main ICT-education conference) and at the “duurzaam MBO” (sustainable vocational education) conference in Amsterdam. In Germany Klausenhof had a presentation at.the International School Congress about energy efficiency in schools (Stralsund, DE, 6/10/10). EnerCities was present at the ICT-2010 Expo Brussels and Wilfrie, Eric and Derk visited OnlineEduca Berlin in December 2010.

EnerCities won the Best Online Game 2010 Dutch Industry Award and the ENGAGE Quality Award best learning game 2010.

The ngo “snunit” from Israel wants to translate the game into Hebrew and Arabic, so we will reach about 800.00 players in Israel.

2.4 Overall Management:

ROC-Nijmegen subcontracted P.W.de Vries from the University of Twente. He is going to do the investigation on the behaviour of players and non players toward Energy consumption. Until now there were no invoices, so we cannot make a declaration. The order however has already been given.

After the interim – and the financial – report partners received the second prepayment. Especially for Paladin this was right in time, because of their larger investment of work at the start.

As foreseen at the beginning of the project, the most of the working hours for the schools involved will be during the roll-out. This is why there seems to be an under spending in the hourly budget for WP 7 and WP 8. After the report period partners should sent in their sheets with working hours.

Due to - amongst other things - difficulties with communication and the Christmasholydays the actual working hours are not yet know for all partners. this makes it impossible to give the right information on the planning and progress of the work packages.

The last period of the project there are two meetings and a final conference to organise. The financial report has to be made and there must be a guarantee that the project infrastructure will be available for at least two years after the project ends.

Then there are some fine tunings to be done on the game and the educational toolbox.
