ONELEGACY HONORS 49SOUTHlandHOSPITALSFOR ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION
17 Hospitals Achieve National Goal of 75% Organ Donation Rate;
Six Coroner Offices Recognized for Donation Practices
LOS ANGELES, California, May 26, 2010 – OneLegacy, the non-profit, federally designated organ and tissue recovery organization serving the seven-county greater Los Angeles area, honored49 Southland hospitals for their performance in support of organ and tissue donation during 2009 at the “Celebrating Our Partners” Organ & Tissue Donation Learning Symposium and Awards & Recognition Ceremony held today at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.
The awards reflect the success of the partnership between OneLegacy and area hospitals participating in the national Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice, which originated in 2003 with a collaborative initiative of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services designedto save and enhance thousands of lives annually by spreading best practices to the nation's largest hospitals.
Seventeen hospitals achieved donation conversion rates of at least 75% during the year 2009, including three that accomplished a 100% conversion rate: Eisenhower Medical Center, NorthridgeHospitalMedicalCenter, and PresbyterianIntercommunityHospital.Two hospitals awarded for conversion rates of at least 75% were also recognized for their achievement in recovering 3.75 or more organs for transplantation per donor: CHOC Children’s at Mission Hospital and CHOC Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
Anotherten hospitals approached the national goal by achieving conversion rates of 65% to 74%. Donation conversion rates represent the percentage of actual donors out of all potential donors.
“The opportunity to save lives through organ donation comes at a time when families face the loss of a loved one, often under sudden circumstances,” stated Tom Mone, executive vice president and chief executive officer of OneLegacy. “Thanks to the generosity of donor families and registered donors, and OneLegacy’scollaboration with hospitals and transplant centers, and the skill of OneLegacy’s donation professionals, people in need of life-saving transplants are better served than ever before.”

In addition, 17 hospitals were recognized for their extraordinary support of tissue donation, which provides life-saving and healing gifts of donated bone, skin, veins, connective tissue and corneas.Three of those hospitals –RiversideCommunityHospital, St. Francis Medical Center, and AntelopeValleyHospital – received awards for the largest number of tissue donors, totaling 119 donors between them.
“OneLegacy is proud to honor these hospitals for their commitment to tissue donation, through which each donor can improve the lives of up to 50 people,” said Prasad Garimella, OneLegacy’s chief operating officer and chief information officer.“Corneal replacements prevent blindness and restore vision.Donated skin can increase burn survival up to 75 percent.Heart valves are the best hope for repairing damaged hearts in pediatric patients.Vascular and bone grafts can prevent limb amputation, while connective tissue helps replace or strengthen damaged joints.”
Also recognized were 15 hospitalsthat had10% or more of their organ donation cases recovered through donation after cardiac death (DCD), in which families have the opportunity to donate organs on behalf of loved ones who suffer a severe neurological injury and/or irreversible brain damage but do not deteriorate to brain death.
Apart from hospitals, six coroner offices were recognized for their donation practices: Kern County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Section; Los Angeles County Department of Coroner; Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department; Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau; San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s Department; and Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office.
In addition, three funeral homes were formally recognized for serving as centralized recovery locations, enabling the recovery of tissue donors that otherwise would have not been recovered due to funeral home access restrictions. The three funeral homes – Rubidoux Mortuary, Risher Montebello Mortuary, and Saddleback Chapel Mortuary – led to a dramatic increase in tissue donation through funeral homes in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, benefiting thousands of patients in need of tissue transplants.
According to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), 28,463organs were transplanted in the U.S. last year.In the greater Los Angeles area, hospitals demonstrated their commitment to serve families and save lives by partnering with OneLegacy to help recover 1,182 life-saving organs for transplant from 382 deceased donors, and a record 2,014 tissue donors. In 2009, OneLegacy also achieved its highest-ever organ donation consent rate of 69 percent, up two points from the previous year and 12 points from 2005.
