INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE

The Louisiana POST Council, in conjunction with the FBI, will co-sponsor an Instructor Development Course August 18-22, 2008 for instructors assigned full-time to accredited academies, and for general police instructors. The 40-hour course will be conducted at the St. Charles Parish Training Academy in Boutte, LA.

As presented by the FBI, the goal of this course is to prepare experienced law enforcement officers to be effective instructors for their agencies and/or academies. The course focuses on principles of learning, the police officer as an adult learner, determining training needs, and defining instructional objectives. Students will become familiar with effective communication and teaching strategies and will make presentations using lesson plans, visual support materials, and contemporary teaching techniques. This course is designed for either the beginning or the experienced instructor, based upon academy needs.

Full-Time Academy Instructors. Any instructor, who is a full-time employee of a POST-accredited police academy, shall be certified by the POST council within one year of his/her employment (as an instructor). The instructor must successfully complete the POST/FBI Instructor Development Course in order to obtain certification. Only full-time officers who have a minimum of 2 years full-time service are eligible to attend.

Individuals who possess FBI Instructor Development Certificates issued upon completion of the FBI National Academy need not attend this course. They are automatically certified by POST. However, a copy of their certificate must be on file with P.O.S.T.

Each agency is allowed to submit two names for consideration. Please mark on the registration if the officer is 1st priority or 2nd priority. Since there are limited slots available for this class, selection will begin with the 1st priority names. If we do not have a full class by the registration deadline, vacancies will be filled using 2nd priority names, then with officers from other parts of the state (on a first-come, first-served basis). It should be noted that first priority is given to basic academies. Please complete the enclosed registration form and return it to POST as soon as possible. ONLY INDIVIDUALS RECEIVING CONFIRMATION FROM POST WILL BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THIS CLASS!

If you have any questions, please contact a member of the P.O.S.T. Staff at 225-925-4942.
