Information about the Sony eReader Supplied by the University of Leicester School of Education

What is on the eReader:

  1. All documents posted on Blackboard for all of the Options modules, with the exception of copyrighted articles. We did not attempt to replicate websites on the eReaders.
  2. All podcasts associated with the Options modules.
  3. Key Dates – these can be found in the Pictures section
  4. Extras – if you connect your eReader to a computer, you can look at its files just as you would a USB memory stick. If you look on the eReader this way, you will find the PC and Mac versions of Calibre, a free software which organises eBooks and which you may like to use. In addition, you will find an mp4 movie file of an excellent presentation given by Julie Norton at this year’s IATEFL conference. You would need to copy the movie file to a computer or mp4 player in order to view it/listen to it.
  5. Some classic books have been preloaded as well.

How to use the eReader:

Detailed instructions are supplied with every eReader. We arranged the documents according to module number and name; we designated these modules numbers/names as “collections.” You can see the collections by pressing the Menu button, then pressing Collections.

Podcasts are also identified according to their module; you can see all of the podcasts by pressing the Menu button, then pressing Audio. Attach a set of headphones, and you can listen to the podcasts directly on your eReader.

The key dates are stored on your eReader as pictures. Press Menu, then Pictures.

Can I add more documents to the eReader:

Yes. The simplest way to add documents is to first get the documents as PDF, on your computer. Connect your eReader. Then drag the PDF file onto the eReader into the database – media – books folder within your eReader. Now you will be able to read it on your eReader.

If you wish to add new Word documents to read on your eReader, it is only slightly more difficult. Refer to the “eReaders for Distance Students” document.

Along with your eReader you have received a CD of classic books. These are yours and you may upload as many as you like to the eReader. Additionally, if you install Calibre onto your computer and connect your computer to the internet, then connect your eReader to your computer, you can use Calibre to subscribe to international newspapers which you may then read on your eReader.
