Our programmes

Opportunity Education (OE) currently has three key types of programme that are running at education sites across the UK in the summer of 2017:

  • English and Culture Summer Programmes: A programme aimed at 8-16 year old Chinese students to help them develop their English skills whilst exploring the South of England and experiencing immersion with British students.
  • English Immersion Programmes: A programme aimed at 8-16 year old Chinese students to help them develop their English skills whilst experiencing life at an English school and living with an English host family.
  • Enterprise, Sports and Chinese Cultural Immersion Programmes: These are aimed at 8-16 year old British students during the summer holidays, where they can make new friends and experience new cultures by immersing themselves in a learning environment with a host group visiting from a Chinese school.

Activity Leader role overview

The role of the Activity Leader is to help organise and run the OEprogrammes. The Activity Leader is responsible for making sure all students are safe, happy and participating in all activities. Bi-lingual activity leaders must be able to speak English and Mandarin.

Positions, duties and responsibilities

  • Lead the activity programme, ensuring students are engaged
  • Represent OE professionally in communications with colleagues, clients and venue as necessary
  • Prepare and deliver enjoyable, interactive daytime and evening activities for OE students, either by using OE activity plans or designing new activities, performing risk assessments as necessary to ensure the safety of the students
  • Supervision/pastoral care duties as required by the rota
  • Ensure that students are properly supervised at all times, on activities, excursions and during pastoral care sessions. Supervision must be appropriate to the scenario and the age of the students e.g. students under 12 years old must be supervised at all times during excursions and not allowed unsupervised free time.
  • Work alongside the teaching staff to integrate the process of learning into the activities
  • Take regular attendance checks, informing the Programme Director of any absences immediately
  • Assist the Programme Director and/or Operations Manager if applicable in the effective day-to-day running of the programme
  • Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, with any emergency, disciplinary or student welfare situation
  • Ensure students do not breach the rules of OE
  • Engage with students in a friendly but professional manner

Student Welfare

  • Ensure that students are supervised at all times, and adhere to behaviour guidelines
  • Implement and monitor Child Welfare and Protection policies, Health and Safety policies and adhere to guidance in the staff handbook
  • Take steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff at all times

Reporting lines

The post holder will report to the Programme Director.

Qualifications

Essential:
Good A level qualifications (or equivalent qualifications)
Desirable:
Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Vulnerable Adults
First Aid

Experience

Desirable:
Summer school experience
Experience working with children

Skills & Attributes

Essential:
Fluent in English and Mandarin
Professional attitude
Flexibility and enthusiasm
Good communicator
Responsible
Able to walk for long periods of time
Able to speak English clearly to a large group
Desired:
Fluent in Cantonese

Other attributes

Willingness to work non-standard hours when necessary
Clean criminal record

Working hours and remuneration

£7 per hour, with working hours of up to 45 hours a week. Working days: July/August (to be confirmed).
