Unit 2: Pop Cult Journalists

ENG 101

Instructor: Ana Roncero Bellido

In this project, you are going to write a feature article for a magazine/newspaper of your choice with information on a cultural phenomenon that interests you. In order for you to be an informed journalist, this project will take several steps:

1) First, you will choose a cultural phenomenon– a popular band or musician, book, TV show, film, anime series, sport events/figures, festivals, etc. Once you have decided on a topic, we will hold a class session where you will share your topic and ideas with your peers and your instructor so we can brainstorm on things you may want to consider, and suggest ideas for you to undertake your research. You will then be required to find information on your topic which you will gather in a question-based research report.

2) Having decided your topic, you will choose the magazine/newspaper which better fits your topic and for which you are writing your article. In this stage, it is important for you to take into account the kind of information you have gathered, who are you writing for and the type of magazine/newspaper you want to write for.

3) You will then explore the magazine/newspaper, showing an understanding of its rhetorical context and purpose: What is the purpose of this magazine/newspaper? How often is it published? Is it free or do people purchase it by choice? How credible is the information in this magazine/newspaper? Who reads this magazine/newspaper? Does the magazine/newspaper require background knowledge from its audience? What kind of language is used (sentence structure/slang)? Why is language used in this way? Do these issues affect the way its information is portrayed? (This will also be part of your Question-Based Research Report).

4) In order to make informed decisions about your writing, you will need to write a CHAT analysis of your article. Remember what you learned about CHAT in the previous project, and use Tyler’s article to help you write your CHAT!

5) Lastly, you will write your article. You will create a rough draft which will be peer reviewed in class in order to help you to make the necessary changes before writing your final draft. Remember to keep into account your research!

Requirements for Project 2:
1. Question-Based Research report (30points).
In this report, you will show your understanding of the magazine/newspaper you are writing for (section 3) and you will also explain your topic. For example, if you were writing an article about the movie, Selena, there will be information that you know about her that you would not be able to write in your article. This is the space where you will let me know everything I need to understand your article (Who/What you are talking about, why it is important, who is concerned about this issue (audience), when is it that this is important, and so on.)

2. CHAT analysis (30 points).

3. Magazine/Newspaper article (30 points).
It should adapt to the conventions of the genre and be consistent with your Question Based Research Report and your CHAT.

4. Participation and Attendance (10 points).
Since this project requires you to engage respectfully and collaboratively with your peers, skipping class or not meeting the peer review deadlines will not only affect your grade but also that of your classmates. For this reason, participation and collaboration are extremely important and failure to comply with this rule will be penalized
